    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interactive and customizable tour with a guide for part of the world-wide web by dynamically adapting tour navigation options and recommendations according to gathered navigation route information. SOLUTION: The tour is stored in a network data base 430 and referred and retrieved with the identifier 440 of an URL, etc., called a tour ID. A touring server 410 maintains a tour structure, takes out an object in a tour cache 450 in advance, and streams the web object as a tour to a touring client 400. Interactive points including tour navigation options and recommendations regarding dynamic objects are provided according to information on preference, navigation route information on an audience is gathered and analyzed in the tour, and the route navigation options and recommendations are dynamically adapted.

A contents provider or an upper level proxy for annotating an object transmits information including urgency, a summary or a title, group classification, or push discrimination, or all of them by using a PICS protocol so that using state or preference information related to the pushed object including using state information and user preference based on object group classification is transmitted to an upper level in hierarchy and each staged object is transmitted to a lower level in the hierarchy, improving the efficiency of caching.

Thus, the client node 101 prepares a reference 106 to be transmitted to the information source 103 by a user 101 and is connected to the Internet for receiving the result of the reference visually or through an audio means. Further. by introducing the relation analyzer 104, the speed and accuracy of the reference and retrieval tasks can be improved.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically distribute the important information by deciding repetitively the state of a client entity until the client entity is set in a prescribed operating state and transmitting the decided state of the client entity to a source entity. SOLUTION: If an input requests a state notification, an awareness handler is called out and an awareness server 1010 reads the ID of a requester and the ID of a target client. A local pointer shifts to a 1st entry of a request buffer and checks the state of the target client. Then the local pointer decides whether or not the target client is set in its desired state and sends a notification to the requester. The important information such as the number of a port where an application of a Web browser, etc., which receives the push request of a target client entity is carried out is returned in the notification. A push proxy server 1040 reads the returned important information and uses it.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a synchronous proxy (or a synchronous server) by providing a synchronous handler which retrieves a remote synchronous logic out of a network, connects the retrieved synchronous logic to the remote hosts and secures the synchronization between the clients and the remote hosts by means of the said synchronous logic. SOLUTION: A synchronous proxy logic is adapted to retrieve a remote synchronous logic 120 out of a network 108, to connect the logic 120 to the remote hosts 109-111 respectively based on a request and to secure the synchronization between the clients 101 and 102 and the hosts 109-111 respectively by means of the logic 120. The synchronizing request also includes the information to identify a conversion code 130 specific to a device which converts the data between the clients 101 and 102 and the hosts 109-111 in a synchronous mode. Based on the said identifying information, a conversion code is retrieved. Then the data are converted between the clients 101 and 102 and the hosts 109-111 based on the code 130.

    Abstract: A system and method for performing variable speed scanning or browsing, wherein a user controls the playout speed of a movie, which does not require additional disk or network bandwidth resources. In a preferred embodiment, the method provides for scanning operations for an MPEG video stream. The method satisfies the constraints of the MPEG decoder (in t he users set-top box) and require a minimum of additional system resources. The embodiments of the present invention include (a) a storage method, (b1) a segment sampling method, (b2) a segment placement method, and (c) a playout method, where (b1) and (b2) are two alternatives for segme nt selection.     Abstract: A video on demand computer system includes a plurality of storage media each storing a plurality of videos. The storage media are disks attached to a computer system. The computer system plays the videos on demand by reading out the videos from the disks as data steams to play selected ones of the videos for users responsive to received user performance requests. The computer system is programmed to monitor the numbers of videos being performed for each of the disks. Based on the monitoring function performed by the computer system, the computer system performs a load balancing function by transferring the performance of a video in progress from one of the disks to another disk having a copy of the video in progress. The computer system periodically performs a reassignment function to transfer videos between the disks to optimize load balancing based on the user performance requests for each of the videos. There are two phases to the load balancing performed by the computer system; a static phase and a dynamic phase. In the static phase, videos are assigned to memory and disks, and in the dynamic phase there is provided a scheme for playing videos with minimal and balanced loads on the disks. The static phase supports the dynamic phase which insures optimal real-time operation of the system. Dynamic phase load balancing is accomplished by a process of baton passing.

    Abstract: YO979-066 AN EFFECTIVE ERROR CONTROL SCHEME FOR SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS A hybrid scheme for controlling transmission errors in digital data communication systems. Normally, data blocks with a small number of parity digits for error detection are transmitted. When the presence of errors is detected, the retransmissions are not the original data blocks but some properly selected blocks for correcting errors in those erroneously received data blocks which are stored in a buffer at the receiver. The retransmitted blocks are formed based on the original data blocks and error-correcting codes with an invertible property. When such blocks are received, they are used to recover the original data blocks either by an inversion operation or by a decoding process.
