2083951 9202564 PCTABS00010 What is described herein is a process for making a copolymer of high specific viscosity by polymerisation of maleic anhydride and a C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether monomer. The invention involves polymerizing said monomers to form a slurry of said copolymer in excess alkyl vinyl ether as solvent and toluene or an aliphatic organic compound as cosolvent, and is characterized by the steps of: (a) precharging a reactor with C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether as solvent at a reaction temperature, (b) feeding a mixture of maleic anhydride and a C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether in substantially stoichiometric amounts, preferably with a slight excess of the alkyl vinyl ether, and at a selected rate, into said precharged reactor, and (c) simultaneously feeding a predetermined mixture of toluene or an aliphatic organic compound and a polymerization initiator continuously over substantially the entire period of polymerization.
Abstract:
There is described a process for the production of an ethanol solution of an ethyl or butyl half-ester copolymer of maleic anhydride and a methyl vinyl ether which comprises: (a) copolymerizing the monomers in acetone as solvent by simultaneously feeding molten maleic anhydride, a molar excess of methyl vinyl ether, and a solution of a free radical initiator in acetone, into a reactor precharged with acetone, at about 68 DEG -85 DEG C., preferably 70 DEG -80 DEG C.; (b) esterifying the acetone solution of said copolymer with ethanol or butanol; and then (c) solvent exchanging ethanol for acetone by continuously injecting vapors of ethanol at about 85 DEG -95 DEG C. into said copolymer solution while simultaneously distilling out acetone therefrom at atmospheric pressure.

Abstract:
A process for the manufacture of benzene-free maleic anhydride/lower alkyl vinyl ether polymer having a specific viscosity ranging from about 1.0 to about 5.5 by premixing maleic anhydride and the alkyl vinyl ether in a mole ratio of between about 1:1.1 and about 1:2 in a cosolvent mixture of lower alkyl substituted benzene, a C6-8 alkane, a saturated lower alkyl ether with a lower alkyl vinyl ether as cosolvent and reacting the monomeric complexed mixture at elevated temperature and pressure in continuous contact with a peroxide initiator wherein the specific viscosity is controlled by adjusting the amount of lower alkyl vinyl ether in the cosolvent mixture. The polymeric product is recovered from the resulting slurry by vacuum drying.
