Abstract: A 2×2 switching element that includes first and second relays each having a first terminal, a second terminal and a third terminal, wherein the first and second relays each operate between a first state to connect the first terminal to the second terminal and a second state to connect the first terminal to the third terminal. The second terminals and third terminals, respectively, of the first and second relays are coupled to one another. The 2×2 switching element is selectively operable between: a first switching state where the first relay is operated in the first state and the second relay is operated in the second state, and a second switching state where the first relay is operated in the second state and the second relay is operated in the second state.

Abstract: A spinal implant replaces excised tissue removed during spine surgery. This implant includes fasteners which firmly attach it to vertebrae adjacent to excised tissue so as to transmit tension and torsional loads to and from those vertebrae. The body of the implant has through cavities into which bone growth material is placed during surgery. The body of the implant also has a finite modulus of elasticity in compression so as to share compressive loads with emplaced bone growth material and with new bony growth facilitated by the emplaced material and the load sharing.

Abstract: A surgical apparatus driver device for use with a subcombination comprising A) a tome for cutting at least one dovetail in bone comprising a shaft having first and second ends, the first end having attached thereto a blade for cutting the dovetail in the bone and the second end having attached thereto an extension for engagement with a mechanical energy transmission mechanism, and B) a guide comprising a tube having a first end and a second end, the tube being configured for acceptance of the shaft of the tome and having tangs extending from one end thereof; wherein the driver comprises a mechanism for engagement with the subcombination, a piston, and a mechanism for providing power to the piston for delivery of a multiplicity of impact to the subcombination.

Abstract: A suture anchor for anchoring one end of a conventional suture to bone comprising a coupling member, at least one barb made of a resilient elastic material projecting form said coupling member, and means for attaching one end of a suture to said suture anchor. The coupling member and the at least one barb and adapted to securely anchor one end of the suture in bone when the suture is attached to the attachment means so that the other end of the suture extending outside the bone can be used to attach objects to the bone. A novel application tool is also provided.

Abstract: One version of the invention relates to a laser detection system that includes a ball lens and a plurality of fiber optic bundles placed adjacent the ball lens so that incoming light rays are focused onto the bundles by the ball lens. In one particular version of the invention, a ball lens is one that can provide an almost infinite number of “principal” axes for off-axis light. Each fiber optic bundle is aimed in a different direction from each other bundle so that each bundle will have a different FOV even though the same ball lens is used to focus the incoming light rays.

Abstract: A bone fastener including an expandable member having an axial channel and an elongated element insertable into the axial channel is described. The expandable member is configured to be insertible into a bore drilled in bone. The distal end of the expandable member also may include a structure for axially releasing the expandable member from an emplacement device that places the expandable member into a bone opening. In one embodiment, the structure for axially releasing includes a frangible membrane capable of being severed from the expandable member during emplacement of the expandable member in a bone opening.A rivet for coupling an object to bone for use with an expandable member is also described. The distal end of the elongated element is shaped into a radially projecting portion adapted for engagement with a washer that contacts the object to be coupled. The washer, having upper and lower surfaces and a bore defined between the surfaces, is disposed around a portion of the shaft. The elongated element is adapted for movement independent of the washer since the radial projection of the element has a different radius of curvature than the washer.An apparatus for use within an endoscope is described. The apparatus includes an elongated, substantially hollow holding means for emplacing a bone fastener of the invention in a bone opening. The expandable member includes a structure for axially releasing the expandable member from the holding means. A method of attaching soft tissue to bone is also described. The invention also includes a surgical fastener kit.

Abstract: An improved surgical tool of the type comprising handle means having a movable tool-operating handle member, a tool head having first and second tissue-engaging members movable between open and closed positions relative to one another, and means coupling the tool head to the handle means for causing opening and closing movement of the tissue-engaging members in response to manipulation of the movable tool-operating handle member. The improved tool is characterized by an inner shaft secured to a stationary part of the handle means, and a hollow outer shaft disposed in telescoping relation to the inner shaft, with the tool head being secured to the inner shaft and the outer shaft being movable axially relative to the inner shaft by manipulation of the movable tool-operating handle member, with the outer shaft causing opening and closing of the tissue-engaging members as it undergoes telescoping movement. Means are provided for concealing movement of the outer tube, particularly when the tool head is a surgical scissors head. Means are also provided for selectively rotating the tool head relative to the handle means.

Abstract: A bone fastener for fixing either a suture or a rivet within a predrilled bone hole includes an expandable sleeve having an axial bore and a pin forcibly insertible into the axial bore, the expandable sleeve being configured to be insertible into a bore drilled in bone, at least a portion of the pin having an outer diameter greater than the inner diameter of at least a portion of the axial bore. The fastener is emplaced by inserting the sleeve into a predrilled hole in the bone, and then forcing the pin into the axial bore, so that the wider portion of the pin presses outward against and expands the narrower portion of the sleeve, causing the sleeve to forcibly contact the walls of the bone hole and fixing the pin and sleeve firmly in place within the hole. Also, apparatus for emplacement of such a fastener includes a holder for holding the expandable sleeve in position within the predrilled hole in the bone, and a plunger moveable in relation to the holder for forcing the pin into the bore, so that the pin can be forced into the axial bore without imposing substantial net forces toward or away from the bone.
