Abstract: Embodiments include heterogeneous catalysts for the selective oxidation of hydrogen sulfide to sulfur that may include a mesoporous material including a plurality of voids; and one or more active catalyst nanoparticles at least partially encapsulated in one or more of the plurality of voids. Embodiments further includes methods of catalytic selective oxidation of hydrogen sulfide to sulfur that may include contacting hydrogen sulfide and oxygen in the presence of said heterogeneous catalysts to produce a product stream including sulfur. Embodiments also include methods of making said heterogeneous catalysts and the like.
