    Abstract: PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for estimating phase error using a variable step size are provided to improve remarkably the astriction-speed and the accuracy of the estimation by forming an outside single estimator using the LMS(Least Mean Square) algorithm having the variable step size. CONSTITUTION: An APP mean value production unit(61) produces a posterior probability mean value from the soft-decision result for the current receiving symbol. A step size determination unit(62) determines variably the step size according to the channel condition. A phase error estimated unit(63) estimates the phase error of the current receiving symbol from the phase error and the posterior probability mean value of the previous receiving symbol using the step size which was variably determined. The soft-decision result is the soft decision output information which is generated in the decoding procedure of a turbo decoder.
