    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital data transmission system, method and device that can avoid or at least reduce defects in conventional technology. SOLUTION: In an STM-16/OC-48 signal 13 bytes of a frame alignment word are used to embed rate adaptation data. More precisely the frame alignment word comprises each 48 known A1 and A2 values from which 13 bytes are replaced by the rate adaptation data. The 13 bytes are four stuff bytes, one signaling byte, one parity compensation byte, one stuff control byte, a three-byte pointer and three byte for error protection by a Hamming code. The rate adaptation data are later replaced by the respective original values A1 or A2. Consequently and advantageously, data are transmitted data and timing transparent.
