Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize reduction of disadvantages due to fiber non-linearity by relaxing a non-linear interaction which limits the number of channels through deterioration of system performance using a prescribed remote pumping amplification system arranged so that a prescribed parameter range can be obtained. SOLUTION: An optical signal from a light source 100 is made incident to a booster amplifier 105 which is an individual Er-doped fiber amplifier, and then made incident to a first fiber span 110. The fiber span 110 is terminated at a repeater 135. A Raman pumping source 120 is set in the repeater 135 to remotely pump a fiber core in the fiber span 110 disposed directly in front of the repeater 135. Moreover, an Er-doped fiber amplifier 125 which is constituted of three individual amplifier stages 125.1-125.3 is arranged in the repeater 135. The gain flattening of the composite gain spectrum of the cascade-connected amplifiers can be realized by a normal design principle.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To embody a no-loss module for compensating the color dispersion of a dispersive transmission fiber which operates at a system wavelength of about 1550 nm. SOLUTION: The module has (a) an input coupling means for inputting a signal, (b) a dispersion compensation fiber(DCF) 3 including a DCF unit consisting of a fiber which is negative in the code of dispersion and has the absolute value of dispersion of at least 50 ps/nm-km, (c) an amplifier means which offsets the loss by this DCF 3 and (d) a coupling means for connecting this amplifier means to the DCF 3. The amplifier means described above has at least one pump 5 which radiates pump energy at the wavelength shorter than the system wavelength, by which the signal in the DCF 3 is amplified by stimulated Raman scattering. The module further can have an adjustment DCF spool for fine adjustment of the dispersion. Either the positive or negative code of the dispersion of the adjustment DCF spool is possible and the absolute value of the dispersion is made twice that of the desired accuracy.
