    Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing patient record information on a specimen tube containing a specimen taken from the patient and for reading the information therefrom when the analysis of the specimen has taken place. A typewriter is used in conjunction with encoding and writing circuits to cause a magnetic recording head to provide binary information on an annular magnetic band on the specimen tube. When the analysis of the tube contents have taken place, the tube is placed in a rotating reading device and a magnetic reading head picks up the coded information and through decoding circuitry either prints out the information and/or stores it in a computer along with the results of the specimen analysis.

    Abstract: The invention relates to optical cuvettes of the throughflow type and to the production thereof. The cuvette comprises a stratified block composed of at least three layers which together define a space constituting a doubly-bent continuous passage with a central elongated cavity communicating with two transverse branch-channels extending to the cuvette surface. An intermediate layer consists of a pair of transparent plates having oppositely arranged inner edges which are shaped in accordance with the path of said passage and are rounded off between the central cavity and the transverse channels, to provide streamline flow in the passage. Two lateral layers consist of plates which respectively close off the passage on either side thereof, between the shaped inner edges of said pair. The invention further provides a manufacturing method wherein two plate-edges are shaped in accordance with the profile of the doubly-bent passage and are oppositely arranged at a given distance to form an intermediate layer on to which two lateral plates are then mounted to close off the passage on either side thereof.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to optical instruments, such as photometers including spectrophotometers, and relates more particularly to a light-shifting device of light refracting type for receiving a beam of light used in such instruments and shifting it into one or the other of two parallel paths. A spring 34 biases valve member 6 against valve seat 5 to provide sealing when the casing is detached from the frame, additional spring-loading during operation being provided by spring 63 acting through ball 60 and coupling member 30. Valve 6 may be of P. T. F. E. and has grooves 25, 26 for alternately connecting cylinder port 12 to inlet and outlet ports 20 in seat 5, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The grooves 25, 26 may be arranged in the form of a cross, or may be arcuate. Coupling member 30 has sawtooth projections, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), for engaging drive pins 70, 71 of wheel 72. The locking pin passes through one of the trunnions supporting ring 55 and is spring-loaded into an axial slot in casing 38, a bevel 69 depressing the pin for entry of the casing into the ring.

    Abstract: 1277762 Blood sampling apparatus MICROMEDIC SYSTEMS Inc 16 July 1969 [26 July 1968] 35716/69 Heading A5R Apparatus is provided for obtaining a blood sample from a patient's finger using a collector device 15, Fig. 11, of the type disclosed in Specification 1277761 having a tube 32 and a resilient funnel member 35 with incisor lancets 38a, 38b, the apparatus having a mounting 12, Fig. 2, having a through passage 12c in which the collector 15 is supported, a striker mechanism having a releasable member 17 adapted to strike a lower end of tube 32 to force lancets 38a, b into a patients' finger placed over funnel 35, a finger holder 8, and means for periodically varying the intensity of clamping of said holder. Holder 8 is pivoted at 7 and has a pin 8c which during pivoting of the holder engages member 17, to pivot the latter against springs 14, and then releases member 17 which consequently strikes tube 32. Holder 8 is retained in its clamping position by engagement of teeth 8f with a grooved rod 29 on a lever 25, the degree of clamping being varied by a massaging-type movement of a finger support 6 on a lever 19 driven through an eccentric by a motor. The first drops of impure blood are absorbed by a pad 40 in funnel 35, the remaining sample passing into tube 32 until a light beam, passing through tube 32 from a source to a photo cell in mounting 12, is interrupted, whereupon a solenoid coil 23 is energised and attracts an armature 22 on a lever 21, the end of which lever thus becomes engageable with a projection 19a on lever 19 to move levers 21 and 25 thus releasing holder 8 which is acted on by a return spring 11, the actuation of the solenoid also stopping the motor. Holder 8 may alternatively be released and the motor stopped via a push button 4. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 13-16 (not shown) the finger is clamped and massaged between a fixed swell (45) on a casing (42) and a sponge pad (46) secured to a stirrup (41) pivoted on an eccentrically driven pin (43).

Holder 8 is retained in its clamping position by engagement of teeth 8f with a grooved rod 29 on a lever 25, the degree of clamping being varied by a massaging-type movement of a finger support 6 on a lever 19 driven through an eccentric by a motor. The first drops of impure blood are absorbed by a pad 40 in funnel 35, the remaining sample passing into tube 32 until a light beam, passing through tube 32 from a source to a photo cell in mounting 12, is interrupted, whereupon a solenoid coil 23 is energised and attracts an armature 22 on a lever 21, the end of which lever thus becomes engageable with a projection 19a on lever 19 to move levers 21 and 25 thus releasing holder 8 which is acted on by a return spring 11, the actuation of the solenoid also stopping the motor. Holder 8 may alternatively be released and the motor stopped via a push button 4. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 13-16 (not shown) the finger is clamped and massaged between a fixed swell (45) on a casing (42) and a sponge pad (46) secured to a stirrup (41) pivoted on an eccentrically driven pin (43).

    Abstract: 1282004 Linkwork; bearings MICROMEDIC SYSTEMS Inc 15 Aug 1969 [16 Aug 1968] 40899/69 Headings F2A and F2K Rotation of an input shaft 3 is converted into reciprocating movement, of variable amplitude, of an output member 43 by a mechanism comprising a crank-pin in the form of a rod 14 which is driven in such a way as to describe a core having an axis 26, Fig. 2, a runner 27 within which the rod 14 can slide, screw-and-nut mechanism 46, 47 for adjusting the longitudinal position of the rod 14 relative to the runner 27, and a yoke member 42 connected to output member 43 and to a rod 31 which guides the runner 27 and is constrained to move in a direction 39 perpendicular to the core axis 26. The rod 14 is secured at one end to a plate 15 which carries slide blocks 10, 11 which are disposed in grooves 8, 9 in a cup-shaped member 5 secured to the input shaft 3. The other end of rod 14 carries an eccentric lug 17 on which is secured a ball 18 retained by a plate 21 in a socket 19 formed in a slide member 20. Rotation of a knob 65 causes rotation of a sleeve 48 carrying the nut 47 and axial movement of slide 20, thereby causing axial movement of rod 14 to vary the amplitude of reciprocation of the output member 43. In the position shown, the rod 14 is parallel to the axis of cup-member 5, and it may be located in that position by a ball 70. Thus the upper limit of reciprocation remains fixed. The sleeve 48 is rotatably mounted with respect to a support 60 by a resilient bearing formed by a triangular frame comprising resilient rods 51, 52 and 53. The ends of the rods are held in the support 60 whilst their middle points co-operate with a circular groove 64 in the sleeve 48.
