Abstract: A cartridge locking mechanism for use in a tape player including a chassis having at least one wall connected at opposite ends to side walls extending perpendicular thereto to form a cartridge receiving cavity having an open end through which a cartridge is received, includes an actuator bar member mounted on the one wall for movement in the direction of insertion of a cartridge into the cavity. A portion of the actuator bar member extends into the cavity for engagement with a cartridge inserted thereinto. The actuator bar member is spring biased toward the open end of the cavity. A second bar member is also mounted on the one wall for movement transverse the movement of the actuator bar member and includes a roller mounted on the end thereof farthest from the actuator bar member, for receipt in a groove formed in a side wall of the cartridge received in the cavity. The second bar member is spring biased toward the actuator bar member. Adjacent ends of the bar members normally are engaged so that the second bar member is held against the spring bias applied thereto with the roller being maintained outside of the cavity while no cartridge is inserted into the cavity. Insertion of the cartridge into the cavity in engagement with the actuator bar portion, moves the actuator bar member against the spring biasing force there-against to release the second bar for movement in the direction of the actuator bar member so that the roller is moved into engagement with the cartridge side wall and into the groove therein. A cam surface on the end of the second bar member engaging the actuator bar member provides gradual movement of the second bar member so that the roller is moved into engagement with the side wall of the cartridge substantially at the time the groove is aligned therewith. Withdrawal of the cartridge from the cavity forces the roller from the groove, thereby to move the second bar member against the spring biasing force to permit the return of the actuator bar member to its normal position.

Abstract: A cartridge locking mechanism for a tape player having a tunnel for receiving a tape cartridge, comprises a pivotally mounted arm having a projection extending into the tunnel in the path of a cartridge received therein. A torsion spring mounted for rotational and torsional movement adjacent the tunnel includes a first end extending outwardly therefrom for engagement with the actuator arm. The second end of the spring extends outwardly toward the cartridge receiving tunnel and includes a roller for receipt in a groove in a side wall of the cartridge. When inserted into the tunnel, the cartridge engages the projection, causing the actuator arm to rotate. Rotation of the arm in turn rotates the torsion spring, thereby to move the roller into the tunnel in engagement with the cartridge in the groove therein. Full insertion of the cartridge into the tunnel ''''twists'''' the torsion spring, providing a force at the roller directed against the tape cartridge to maintain the latter secured in the tunnel.

Abstract: A sheet metal capstan housing for mounting a capstan drive shaft on the tape deck of a cartridge tape player includes a substantially Z-shaped support bracket having a first leg fastened to the base wall of the tape deck in parallel relation therewith. The opposite leg of the bracket includes a first toroidal bearing mounted therein for receipt of a capstan drive shaft extending substantially perpendicular to the base wall of the tape deck. A second toroidal bearing aligned with the first bearing is provided in the base wall to receive the capstan shaft also, and a capstan stop member is attached to the base wall on the surface thereof opposite the surface on which the support bracket is mounted. Abstract: A cam assembly is disclosed which is used for the selection of different track positions for a magnetic tape head in a magnetic tape player/recorder. The tape track position of a magnetic tape head is determined by the position of a cam follower member which is selectively positioned with respect to a reference surface by selectively positioning a number of different diameter ball bearings between the cam follower member and the reference surface. Specifically, a solenoid actuated armature causes the linear movement of pawl members which in turn rotate a ratchet wheel member. The ratchet wheel member forms part of a cam apparatus that includes four ball bearings of different diameters. Sequential rotation of the ratchet member selectively positions ball bearings of different diameters between a non-rotatable reference surface and the cam follower member. Thus an accurate and inexpensive cam positioning mechanism is disclosed which uses precision ball bearings instead of an expensive cam having precisely formed surfaces to implement precise magnetic tape head position changes.

Abstract: A cartirdge locking mechanism for a tape player includes a roller arm mounted for pivotal movement on a first mounting member and a bistable spring arrangement including a coil spring and a threaded pin, the former being screwable onto the latter, coupled between the roller arm and a second mounting member to operate the roller arm between two stable positions. A leaf spring connected to the roller arm extends into a cartridge receiving tunnel of the tape player for deflection by a cartridge inserted thereinto. Deflection of the leaf spring snaps the bistable spring arrangement from a first to a second stable state causing the roller to engage and be received in a notch in the side wall of the cartridge to removably secure the latter in the tunnel. The force provided by the bistable spring arrangement through the roller, is adjustable by screwing or unscrewing the coil spring member of the bistable spring arrangement with respect to the pin member coupled to the roller arm.
