Abstract: An automatic self-centering chuck system for use on an engraver. The chuck system includes a plurality of jaws which are slidably mounted for movement in a radial direction toward a central aperture of the chuck to clamp a shaft for an engraving cylinder. Each of the jaws is actuated for movement by a lever pivotally mounted within the chuck. The levers are actuated for pivotal movement by an axially reciprocating drawbar which is energized for movement by a series of pneumatic cylinders. The components of the chuck are accurately machined to provide close tolerance, precise movements of the jaws whereby a cylinder will be accurately positioned at the central rotational axis of the chuck. In order to ensure that the precise level of jaw movement is maintained throughout the life the chuck, a lubricant flushing or purging system is provided for flushing normal wear particles from the precision components internal to the chuck.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for automated loading and unloading of a cylinder in an engraver. The method and apparatus permit the engraver to accommodate cylinders of differing geometries, including a range of lengths, diameters and mounting configurations. The engraver includes a headstock and a tailstock which cooperate to rotatably support a cylinder at an engraving station in the engraver. The engraver includes a cylinder handling system having at least one cylinder supporting the cylinder between the headstock and the tailstock during the loading and unloading of the cylinder. The cylinder handling system includes a driver for driving the cylinder support towards and away from the engraving station until the headstock and the tailstock engage and rotatably support the cylinder. Once the cylinder is rotatably supported between the headstock and the tailstock, then the cylinder support is retracted. The cylinder support includes a telescoping support member having a support nest for engaging and supporting the cylinder at the engraving station.

Abstract: A universal cylinder mount (22, 24) for mounting a plurality of cylinders (16) between a headstock (12) and a tailstock (14) of an engraver (10). Abstract: A platform (50) for supporting an engraving head (12) in a manner accommodating translational movement without any associated rotation. The platform (50) has a deck (15) which is supported by a pair of flexible support columns (22a, 22b). In operation the platform (50) is situated alongside a rotating printing cylinder (10). The engraving head (12) is mounted on the deck (15) of the platform (50) and is provided with a guide shoe (13) which rides against the surface of the printing cylinder (10). As the cylinder (10) rotates to angular positions having different radii, the engraving head (12) responds with a purely linear reaction. Consequently the engraving head (12) is able to engrave uniform-depth cavities (32) in the surface of the printing cylinder (10). In two alternative embodiments the deck (115, 204) is driven by a resilient link arrangement which is coupled to a leadscrew and carriage assembly (102, 108, 202).

Abstract: A system for locating a plurality of engraving heads on an engraver wherein a plurality of engraving heads are automatically positioned into a predetermined configuration. A mechanism for positioning the engraving heads preferably includes a leadscrew and a drive nut which is rotatable relative to the leadscrew. In addition, each of the engraving heads preferably includes a rotatable drive nut with a respective motor for rotating the nut whereby the heads may be selectively positioned into a predetermined configuration. In a further aspect of the invention, the engraving heads are mounted on a carriage which is movable in an axial direction relative to a cylinder to be engraved. The heads are selectively positionable on the carriage and the carriage includes a nut threadably engaged with a leadscrew whereby the carriage may be driven in an axial direction relative to the cylinder to be engraved. In yet another aspect of the invention, a method is provided for engraving a cylinder including mounting a cylinder in the engraver, automatically adjusting a plurality of engraving heads into a predetermined configuration, and engraving a plurality of images onto the cylinder.

Each cylinder support (30) comprises a telescoping support member (34) having a support nest (36) for engaging and supporting the cylinder (14) at the engraving station (15).
