PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved beacon signaling method for facilitating accurate energy detection and timing synchronization with a transmitter. SOLUTION: Beacon signals of a narrow band are transmitted on the same tone in at least two consecutive symbol periods with at least 60% power against a transmitter power during the relevant periods. Further, a wideband signal is transmitted during at least one of at least two consecutive symbol periods with 40% or less power of the transmitter power during the relevant period. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide group communications methods and apparatus for conserving resources. SOLUTION: A multicast operation is supported with transmission characteristics, such as transmission power level, coding rate, and/or modulation method being selected to reliably communicate information to end nodes in the group. Thus, resources can be conserved by matching transmission requirements with information on requirements of one or more group members. The requirements for reliably reaching the end node with the worst channel conditions can determine the group transmission requirements. Also, the requirement can be used for determining the group transmission requirements, and power level and other transmission resource allocations can change in response to changes in group membership and/or conditions corresponding to existing group members. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for constructing different transmission segment types of segment from air link resources such as e.g., traffic channels, for effectively use the novel structure. SOLUTION: Different segment types 516 are constructed to achieve different performance characteristics. The segments 516 are aligned to deviated different starting times selected to suppress to a minimum variation in the maximum number of segments 516 starting in any of predetermined time slots 530-542. The segment starting times different from each other suppress to a minimum waste of non-used assignment messages caused by structural non-efficiency and balance traffic. Information collected for channel quality is used to classify users. Information stored for different segment types 516 having different advantages, respectively, is used for assignment processing for effectively matching the classified user to any suitable segment type. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method and an apparatus for location tracking and paging. SOLUTION: An inactive-state mobile node updates its location information by transmitting a first message via a radio link to an access node. In response to the first message, the access node generates a second update message. The second message includes a mobile node identifier. The second message is received by a tracking agent. The tracking agent updates location information corresponding to the mobile node. When a route of the second message is specified by the mobile node as a form of an IP message using a mobile IP, the route of the second message is specified for a last network attachment point of the mobile node by a mobile IP home agent. Un aparato (10) que comprende: un procesador de señales digitales (26), DSP, el DSP estando configurado para: recibir una señal discreta de símbolos de datos complejos (C), calcular las respuestas de frecuencia (A1,...AM) correspondientes a los tonos (f(1),...f(M)), mediante una DFT de M puntos, y emitir un vector [A1,...AM] de longitud M; procesar el vector [A1,...AM] hasta un nuevo vector de longitud N, en el que la longitud N del nuevo vector es mayor que la longitud M del vector emitido [A1,...AM], y en el que el nuevo vector tiene entradas correspondientes a los tonos distintos a los tonos asignados a un transmisor, e insertar símbolos de valor cero correspondientes a los tonos distintos a los tonos asignados al transmisor; y realizar una operación de transformada discreta inversa de Fourier de N puntos en el nuevo vector después de la inserción de ceros para obtener el vector de muestras de señales digitales (S), y generar una señal basada en OFDM usando el vector de muestras de señales digitales (S) para su transmisión; y un filtro de conformación de impulsos (30) para realizar el filtro de impulsos del vector convertido de digital a analógico de las muestras de señales digitales.

Methods and apparatus of efficient communication of resource allocation are described. A base station transmits a resource assignment message, e.g., a state transition message, to a wireless terminal including a first part, e.g., a base station assigned wireless terminal On state identifier, identifying a resource being assigned and a second part, e.g., an ON state mask, identifying a portion of the resource allocated to the wireless terminal. The same resource allocation message information also communicates one of a plurality of different modes of commanded On state operation. The resource allocation message structure supports flexible allocation of available resources facilitating a resource to be partitioned differently at different times accommodating current needs. A predetermined recurring channel structure and association of segments with particular mask bits, facilitates allocated control segments to be used unambiguously without the need to include an overhead wireless terminal identifier field with the control report bits being communicated
