Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition having high microbicidal activity by including a polycationic polymer bearing pyridinium group on the main chain skeleton and a specific organic compound in specified proportions. SOLUTION: This composition is obtained by including (A) a compound selected from polymers each composed of recurring unit of formula I (X1 and X2 are each a counter-anion in a quaternary salt; (m) is 0-6) and having a number-average molecular weight of >=1,000 and (B) a compound selected from (1) aliphatic bromonitroalcohols of formula II (R1 is H or the like; R2 is H or methyl), (2) 5-bromo-5nitro-1,3-dioxane, (3) 4,5-trimethylene-4- isothiazolin-3-one or the like, and (4) 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one, or the like, pref. in a weight ratio A/B of (95:5) to (5:95). The concentration of the active ingredient in this composition is pref. 0.05-200 mg/L.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to well disperse a specific betaine compd. having a sulfone residue into a polymer matrix and to generate high secondary harmonics by synthesizing this betaine compd. SOLUTION: The betaine compd. which has the sulfone residue and is expressed by formula I is synthesized. In the formula I, each of R and R is hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group or R and R may form a (substd.) atom. ring integrated with carbon atoms with which the respective groups are bonded. Y is nitrogen atom or carbon atom having a substituent R, Z is a single bond or methylene group, each of R and R is hydrogen atom or a halogen atom and R and R may be the same or different and may vary with each of repeating units. A is hydrogen atom a halogen atom, hydroxyl group, acyloxy group or a group expressed by formula II; (m) is an integer from 1 to 12. R is hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl or phenyl group and R is hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or lower alkyl group.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to align liquid crystal molecules particularly perpendicularly to the increased oblique alignment angle with a substrate by using a liquid crystal alignment treating agent consisting of polyamide having the repeating unit expressed by specific formula and a weight average mol.wt. of a specific value or above. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment treating agent consisting of the polyamide having the repeating unit expressed by the formula I and the weight average mol.wt. of >=1,000 is used. In the formula II or III, Y is an oxygen atom or bivalent organic group expressed by-CH2 O-, etc., R is 8 to 22C alkyl group or fluorine-contained alkyl group, Y is a bivalent organic group expressed by-(CH2 )n -,-O(CH2 )n -,-CH2 O (CH2 )n -,-C(=O)O(CH2 )n (n is an integer from 2 to 6), etc., R to R are 1 to 6C alkyl groups which may be the same or different, m is an integer of >=1.

In the formula I, Q is a 10-30C substituent contg. alicyclic hydrocarbon. In the formula II, each of R and R is H or a substituent represented by formula III, (m) is 0 or 1, each of Y and Y is a 1-12C hydrocarbon chain, Y and Y may be different from each other, each of R and R is H, lower alkyl, etc., each of A and A is a substituent having a conjugated system and Q is a substituent contg. cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ophthalmic lens material which has high oxygen permea bility and is excellent in the properties required of ophthalmic lenses by polymer izing a specific organosiloxane monomer having a pyrrolidone ring. SOLUTION: An org. polymer is produced by polymerizing an org. monomer component contg. at least 5wt.% organosiloxane monomer represented by formula (wherein R to R are each 1-6C alkyl; A is a single bond or an org. group; R is H or methyl; p is 0-6; n is 0-30; and m is 1-3). In the formula, pref. R to R are all methyl; and A is pref. alkyleneoxycarbonyl. A polymer produced by copolymerizing 5-95wt.% monomer represented by the formula, 1-91wt.% hydrophilic org. monomer [e.g. N-vinylpyrrolidone or (meth)acrylic acid], and 4-94wt.% hydrophobic org. monomer has an improved balance among oxygen permeability, strengths, and hydrophilicity and is pref. as an ophthalmic lens material. This polymer, though usable for various kinds of ophthalmic lens, is esp. suitable for contact lenses.

CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R to R are alkyl or phenyl; X is single bond, O, COO or OCO; Q is liquid crystal group; (p) and (q) are 2-10) such as a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I, for example, is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with a compound of formula IV to give a compound of formula V and reducing the dinitro group of the compound of formula V. Both of the compounds of formula III and formula V are new compounds.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a disinfectant which has a sufficiently high disinfectant activity, does not foam, is thermally stable, and is widely useful by using a polycation polymer having pyridinium groups in the principal chain structure as the effective component. CONSTITUTION:A polycation polymer comprises repeating units of formula I (wherein A is a single bond, oxygen, phenylene, or dioxyethylene; X1 and X2 are each a gegen anion of a quaternary salt provided they may be the same or different from each other; p and q are each 1-6 provided they may be the same or different from each other; m is 1-6; provided each repeating unit may have A, X1, X2, p, q, and m each the same as or different from those of other repeating units) and has a number-average mol.wt. of 1,000 or higher. The polymer is readily, produced by reacting a pyridine compd. of formula II (wherein m is 1-6) with a dihalogen compd. of formula III (wherein A is a single bond, oxygen, phenylene, or dioxyethylene; Y is halogen; and p and q are each 1-6) a high yield.
