Abstract: A MOULDING TUNNEL HAVING A COMPOSITE PISTON MOVABLE THEREIN IS CLOSED AT ONE END BY MEANS OF A SEPARABLE MOULD INSET. THE MOULDING MATERIAL IS SUPPLIED INTO THE TUNNEL BETWEEN THE COMPOSITE PISTON AND THE MOULD INSET BY A SUITABLE HOPPER AND A PLURALITY OF TRANSVERSELY OPERABLE PISTONS ARE MOVABLE INTO THE TUNNEL FROM THE SIDES AND BOTTOM THEREOF. UPON A TWO-STAGE MOVEMENT OF THE COMPOSITE PISTON AND THE TRANSVERSELY MOVABLE PISTONS THE MOULDABLE MATERIAL IS FORCED INTO THE MOULD INSERT TO FORM AN ARTICLE. THE MOULD INSERT AND THE ARTICLE ARE THEN EJECTED FROM THE MOULD TUNNEL AND COVEYED THROUGH A CURING TUNNEL IN CONTIGUOUS RELATIONSHIP TO A PLURALITY OF OTHER MOULD INSERTS HAVING MOULDED ARTICLES THEREIN AT THE END OF THE CURING TUNNEL, THE MOULD INSERTS ARE SEPARATED AND THE MOULDED ARTICLE EJECTED. THE MOULD INSERTS ARE THEN CONVEYED BACK TO THE TUNNEL FOR INSERTION INTO THE END OF THE TUNNEL FOR A NEW MOULDING OPERATION.

Abstract: 1,253,881. Extruding wood/binder compositions; wood working. P. SORBIER. 27 Jan., 1969 [26 Jan., 1968], No. 4417/69. Headings B5A and B5L. [Also in Divisions B1-B2 and F4] Wood 2 is reduced to long shavings 7 at the bottom of a hopper 1, Fig. 3, by endless toothed chains 4, and subsequently converted to wood pulp by a continuous process, and used for moulding. The chains 4 include teeth 6 and limit shoes 42, which determine the thickness of the shavings. The shavings are reduced to chips 10 in a wood mincer 9 which has a rotating disc 11 and are dried on a grid conveyer 12 with air supplied by nozzles 14 and circulated by a fan 13. Switches 19, 20 are operated by actuators 17, 18 to control a flap 21 and thus the feed of batch mixers 26, 27. Here a binder, e.g. synthetic resin is supplied via a conduit 28. The mixer's product is delivered by a partitioned conveyer 36 to the feed hopper 40 of a moulding press 41.

Abstract: 1,245,692. Compression moulding of wood pulp. P. SORBIER. 28 Jan., 1969 [29 Jan., 1968; 29 July, 1968], No. 4745/69. Heading B5A. Articles are made from paste like material e.g. wood pulp and binder by delivering a charge of material into a moulding tunnel closed at one end by a movable insert and advancing a two part piston in two stages along the tunnel to press the material against the insert. Moulding material is fed from hopper 8 into the tunnel 7. Insert A 1 closes one end of the tunnel and the other is closed by a two part piston comprising pistons 10 and 11. Two horizontally opposed pistons 17, 18 and a vertically acting piston also operate to compress the moulding material. The operation of the apparatus in moulding the end for a box having a flat portion and a surrounding rib is shown in Fig. 9 from which the tunnel has been omitted. Piston 10 first moves in the direction of arrow 20 to form the flat portion of the box end against insert A 1 which is held in position by stops 15. Side and base plungers 16, 17 and 18 are moved in to define the rib portions and these portions are compressed to their final density by part 11 of the composite plunger. Plunger 10 has an outstanding rib which forms a groove in the moulding to co-operate with a rib 12 on the adjacent insert A 2 in the curing tunnel. The plungers 16, 17, 18 are withdrawn, stops 15 are raised and the plunger 10 forces the insert A 1 and moulding 1, together against the previous moulding and into the curing or drying tunnel 24. At the end 30 of the drying tunnel 24, the end moulding and insert A 6 are separated from the others by a plunger 27 with a wedge shape head which engages projections 25 on the inserts A. The moulding is separated from the insert and removed by conveyer 32 and the insert is pushed by plunger 33 on to conveyer 35. The insert is moved along conveyer 35 in the direction of arrow 36, until it is fed back to the moulding tunnel 7 by plunger 40; the drive of belt 35 incorporating a slipping mechanism so that it advances an insert to position A 9 only when the previous insert and the plunger 40 are clear of the conveyer. In another embodiment (not shown) the whole of a box is moulded in one operation, the hopper being moved laterally to the right and a feed plunger supplied so that a pressing plunger acting vertically downwards on the moulding may also be used. The insert is made in two relatively slidable parts to assist ejection of the moulded article.

Abstract: A process for producing a heat-resistant object comprises drying fibrils of a ligneous material previously immersed in a boiling aqueous salt solution, said drying being continued until the moisture content thereof is about 10 percent, impregnating said dried fibrils with a solution of a polymerizable resin and pressure molding the resulting impregnated fibrils so as to polymerize said resin thereby producing said heat-resistant object.
