Abstract: 1467886 Oxidation of di- or tri-methylbenzenes STANDARD OIL CO 15 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 21569/74 Heading C2C A method of oxidizing di- or tri-methylbenzene with molecular oxygen to benzene di- or tri-carboxylic acid or infra-molecular anhydride thereof under liquid phase conditions at temperatures in the range of 130‹ to 275‹ C. comprises conducting said oxidation in the presence of the catalyst system comprising either a source of bromine with manganese and zirconium or a source of bromine with cobalt, manganese and zirconium and wherein said catalyst system provides a total of from 1 to 5 milligram atoms of manganese and cobalt and from 1 to 10 milligram atoms of bromine for each mole of said di- or tri-methylbenzene and from 0À1 to 3À0 milligram atom of zirconium for each milligram atom of manganese and cobalt.
