Abstract: 20,299. Suter, J., and Lenk, W. Sept. 21. Automatic instruments; carillon mechanism.-A self-playing zither or instrument with strings B, bells 0, or other sounding devices, is actuated by the lever mechanism H, H , controlled by the travelling tune-sheet F, and by the continuouslyrevolving star-wheels K, K for engaging the actuating-levers D', D . A tone gradation device is provided, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, consisting of the slide Q with the arms Q to engage the sounder levers D', D , and means for actuating the slide to move the arms towards and from the sounder levers to limit their movement, the actuating means being controlled by the lever H' and the tune-sheet. The spring-pressed picker levers D for the strings normally hold the picker arms D' away from the strings, but when a lever D is released and falls into its damping position an upward swinging picking motion is obtained from a star-wheel K by the engagement of the star-wheel with the friction roller D of the picking lever. The strikers or hammers E for the bells C are operated through levers D and starwheels K in a similar manner. Each lever D , D has its rear end abutting against the felted stop rail L. The shaft J and the tune-sheet F are driven by gearing from the motor N. The notesheet F passes between the rod I' and the roller I' journalled in the cross-bar I , hinged at one end and adapted to be locked in place by the hook I . The slide Q for producing the desired gradation of tone has a lug or pin projecting into the slot R in the hub R' of the double-armed lever R connected with the links T, T'. The lugs T', T of the links T, T are alternately engaged by the pin U held in the loop U of the lever U, similar to the lever D', and likewise connected by the link G with a sheet lever H . The instrument plays at a certain gradation until the slide Q is shifted. The connections between the links G, G', G' and the levers D', D , U are preferably adjustable.
