Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a pH-measuring electrode with a metal oxide for enabling pH to be measured accurately without being affected by a coexisting substance as a pH-sensitive film. CONSTITUTION:An electrode-sensitive portion 24 consisting of a sensitive film support 21 in a specified shape and dimensions. a metal oxide film 22 which is formed on one surface of this sensitive film support for example by sputtering, and a porous insulation film 23 which is clad on an entire surface of this metal oxide film 22 by sputtering in a similar manner is fitted into a penetration hole which is formed on a bottom surface of a cylindrical support pipe 25 in a liquid-concentration state. The metal oxide film 22 which becomes a pH- sensitive film is positioned outside the support pipe 25 where its nearly half contacts a liquid whose pH is to be measured (a liquid to be measured). The porous insulation film 23 covering the metal oxide film 22 eliminates an interference substance and protects the pH-sensitive film.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a pH measuring electrode which uses iridium oxide as a pH sensitive film, is constructed small and sturdily, easy to manufacture, presents easiness in working, excels in the resistance against chemicals, has a wide pH range measurable, and which can measure not only liquid but also the surface or inside of a solid matter and also can make measurement stably for a long period of time. CONSTITUTION: The pH measuring electrode 1 includes an insulative supporting member 42 in a thin and long shape and a pH sensitive part 2 fixed to one end of the supporting member 42 in contact with an object to be measured while exposing only its end plane part substantially to the outside. The part 2 has a rod 28 of insulative ceramic whose one end 28a is shaped in to a plane, and the surface of the rod 28 is subjected to a specular finish so that at least the surface roughness is Rmax 0.02 and Ra 0.002, and thereover, an iridium oxide film 22 is formed whose iridium-oxygen proportion ranges 1:2.5 to 1:3.5, and further a porous insulative film 23 is formed covering at least a part of the peripheral circumferential surface and the end plane where the iridium oxide film 22, is provided.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an electrode which has an improved chemical resistance with a small amount and enables a stable measurement to be made by providing an insulation support and a iridium oxide sensitive film which is formed on the support and by specifying a ratio of oxygen for the sensitive iridium. CONSTITUTION:An iridium oxide sensitive film 2 is provided on a surface of an insulation support 1 and a lead wire 3 is taken out of one edge of the sensitive film 2. The lead wire 3 as well as the sensitive film 2 at one edge side and one portion of the support 1 are covered with a support pipe 4 consisting of plastic such as polyvinyl chloride and are fixed, thus forming an electrode for measuring pH. The sensitive film 2 is iridium oxide with a ratio of oxygen to iridium being 2.5-3.5. By using this iridium oxide sensitive film 2, an improved linear response within a range of pH 0-14 can be obtained and further the response is fast and is stable over a long period. Also. it is desirable that the sensitive film 2 is as thick as 400-100,000 Angstrom and the response speed becomes slow outside this range, thus causing drift to occur and stability to deteriorate.

The iridium oxide sensitive film 3 consists of an iridium oxide where a ratio of oxygen to iridium is 2.5-3.5.
