Abstract: 14,043. Todd, J. S. June 15. [Cognate Application, 17,046/09.] Sleepers, composite ; sound and vibration. preventing.-R e i n f o r c e d concrete sleepers are composed of two transverse ties or bars formed with integral bridge-pieces in line with the rails to support the rail ends. The transverse ties or bridge-pieces, or both, may be extended. Packing of wood, metal, felt, 'Willesden canvas,' &c. may be used. The ties may be widened at the ends, and for crossings &c. they may be connected by more than two bridge-pieces. The cross-section of the ties and bridge-pieces may be rectangular, or they may be broader at the bottom than at the top, with slanting sides or with a set-off ; and the bottom may be formed with ribs and grooves or projections and depressions. The reinforcing-rods of iron, steel, &c. may be round, square, flat, &c., and they may be straight, undulating, or twisted. One modification of the sleeper is shown in Figs. 13 and 14.

Abstract: 122,281. Todd, J. S. Jan. 31, 1918 Sleepers, pot; tie-bars.-Pot sleepers of any material, but shown as of reinforced concrete, having the upper surface provided with grooves b throughout the length; the grooves are preferably tapered outwardly at each end b to facilitate the insertion or removal of the bars c without interfering with the securing of the chair plate or rail, the tiebars being extended to pass beyond the rail chair or plate. The chair o has a felt &c. layer r underneath. The tie-bars are preferably secured by bolts f, g, and the chairs by bolts m, n which do not pass through the tie-bars. The tie-bar bolts f, g are arranged axially of the pot sleepers, and engage with nuts h, i embedded in the sleepers.

Abstract: 19,944. Todd, J. S. Aug. 31. Sleepers, metal, and securing rails thereto ; chairs; chairs, securing to sleepers; rail joints.- Tapered eccentric plugs are seated in corresponding holes or recesses in the rail flanges, in chairs, or in fish-plates to adjust the gauge, the plugs being rotated without wholly removing them from their recesses. The plugs t may be circular, or polygonal with more than four sides, and may be partly tapered and partly prismatic or cylindrical, as shown in Fig. 10. They may be circular, with one or more projections engaging holes around the plug recess, or they may be slotted or slit for part of their width ; or they may be in halves. The sides of the polygon or their equivalents may have distinctive marks or numerals, and may register with a groove or rib on the chair &c. With steel sleepers, tongues 12 prevent turning of the bolts.

Abstract: 5341. Todd, J. S. March 2. Tie-bars ; sleepers, composite.-Pot sleepers a are connected by tie-bars f having at each end one or more open-ended slots k or slots engaging the holding-down bolts e of the chairs &c., to allow the tie-bars to be disconnected without removing the chairs &c. The slots k may be on one or both sides of the barf, and either straight or arcuate. The tie-bar may be protected in the centre by tar or by concrete, which may be reinforced by a coil g of barbed wire, attached at each end to the bar. A recess is provided in either the chair or the sleeper or both to receive the tie-bar. To secure an elastic connexion, either the tie-bars or the recesses may be curved. The ends of the tie-bars are flat but the centre may take any shape. The sleepers, if of concrete, may be reinforced by two wire coils b, c, which may either be friction tight or be tied together.

Abstract: 16,233. Todd, J. S., Wade, F. R., and Jones, J. R. July 15. Chair keys and wedges of flexible sheet steel are used in pairs and tightened by a bolt, projections, holes, or recesses on or in the keys engaging holes or studs in or on the rail web. The keys a, Fig. 2, have their upper ends bent to abut against one another as shown also at l in Fig. 7 are formed with a shoulder i to abut against the chair, and are drawn together and their arched sides g flattened by a bolt c provided with locking nuts or washers, or both. For rail joints, the ends are placed in the chair and the key is tightened, and a projection x may be formed on each key part to take into holes in the rail end as shown in Fig. 11. To prevent creeping, a stud t, Fig. 7, preferably at the centre of the rail, is placed in its web to take between the abutting key ends t ; or the stud may be lengthened to separate the ends l. A plain or screwed setscrew or stud v, Fig. 10, in the key, placed there before the bolt c, may take into a hole in the rail web ; or each key part may be provided with such a screw taking into separate holes in the rail web ; or the projections x, Fig. 11, may be formed at the abutting corners of the keys and take into one hole in the rail web.
