    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a new derivative useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals and an intermediate for organic compounds. CONSTITUTION:The derivative of formula I (R is a 1-5C alkyl, 2-5C alkenyl, etc.; R is H, a 1-10C alkyl, etc.; R to R are each H, a 1-10C alkyl, halogen, etc.; R to R are not H at the same time), e.g. 3-(4-t-butylphenyl)-7-isopropyl-2- methyl-1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-4-carboxylic acid. The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting 1mol equivalent of an imine derivative of formula II with 0.1-10mol equivalent of a homophthalic anhydride derivative of formula III in a solvent (e.g. acetonitrile) preferably at 0-100 deg.C for 30min to 60hr.
