Abstract:
A piloting fuel injector assembly for a supersonic ramjet engine has a cowl (24, 70) confining a pilot air portion of the airstream. A conical member (34, 74) produces a subsonic recirculation zone (30, 76) and a shock wave falling within the cowl. Pilot fuel injected (40, 82) upstream of the recirculation zone burns stoichiometrically. The exhaust (38, 86) from the cowl is sonic, producing a shock wave which facilitates ignition of the main fuel injected (46, 84) upstream of the cowl exhaust.

A method of combusting an endothermic fuel (20) in a lean premixed/prevaporized combustion system includes transferring thermal energy from a combustion air stream (16) to an endothermic fuel decomposition catalyst (2) to cool the combustion air stream (16) and heat the fuel (20) and catalyst (2) to a temperature sufficient to endothermically decompose an endothermic fuel (20). The catalyst (2) is contacted with fuel (20) to cause the fuel (20) to endothermically decompose into a reaction product stream (22). The reaction product stream (22) is mixed with the cooled combustion air stream (16) to form a well-mixed, uniformly lean fuel/air mixture and the fuel/air mixture is combusted at an equivalence ratio of less than 1 to produce a combustion product stream (28). The invention also includes a system for practicing the method.

Procédé de combustion d'un combustible endothermique (20) dans un dispositif de combustion pauvre prémélangée et prégazéifiée, comprenant le transfert de l'énergie thermique depuis un courant d'air de combustion (16) vers un catalyseur de décomposition de combustible endothermique (2), afin de refroidir le courant d'air de combustion (16) et de réchauffer le combustible (20) et le catalyseur (2) jusqu'à une température suffisante pour décomposer endothermiquement un combustible endothermique (20). Le catalyseur (2) est mis en contact avec le combustible (20), afin de provoquer la décomposition endothermique du combustible (20) en un courant de produit de réaction (22). Ce courant de produit de réaction (22) est mélangé avec le courant d'air de combustion refroidi (16), afin de constituer un mélange homogène et uniformément pauvre de combustible et d'air, qui est ensuite brûlé selon un rapport d'équivalence inférieur à 1, afin d'obtenir un courant de produit de combustion (28).
