Abstract: A lightweight high temperature multiproperty rotor disk and method of manufacture for use in a gas turbine engine. The rotor disk of a nickel super alloy and having a plurality of lightweight high temperature single crystal blade attachment lugs bonded thereto. The single crystal high temperature rotor blade attachment lugs being cast in a substantially rectangular shape and bonded to the circumference of the disk. A method of manufacturing the rotor includes positioning the plurality of single crystal attachment lugs on a positioning ring that has locating nests formed thereon. Subsequently, the rotor disk is placed within the bonding ring and a restraining ring is placed around the entire subassembly. Upon subjecting the assembly to high temperature the rotor disk, having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than the coefficient of thermal expansion of the restraining member, forces the components into a mating relationship. Upon completion of the bonding cycle, the restraining ring is removed from the assembly and the bonding ring is machined away.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a vehicle wheel includes the steps of providing a wheel rim and a spider and positioning the wheel rim and the spider adjacent each other. The wheel rim and the spider are then friction welded to each other. Subsequently, a portion of the spider is locked down onto the wheel rim by electromagnetic forming. Preferably, one end of the rim is positioned in a cavity formed in the spider. During friction welding, the upset material of the rim fills the cavity of the spider. Turbine rotors with good accordance of the axes of the wheel and the shaft will be obtained by fitting a projection (or recess) and a recess (or projection) formed at the base of the wheel and the end of the shaft concentrically to the outer shape thereof, and by brazing the ring-shaped area outside the fitted parts.

Abstract: A method of flash/butt welding an aluminum bicycle wheel rim, in which an aluminum sleeve having a dielectric anodized hardcoat surface finish is inserted into the center of the rim in order to support the interior walls of the rim during the welding process, is disclosed. The walls of a wheel rim or other similar metal profile defines an inner space in a tubular section of the rim. The sleeve is partially inserted into a first end of the rim and partially inserted into a second end of the rim. During the welding process, an electric current flows across a small space or gap between the two ends. The electric current melts the ends, at which time the two ends are pressed together in order to forge them into a single piece. The metal sleeve supports the inner walls of the profile in order to prevent collapse of the wall during welding. Due to the dielectric coating, the sleeve does not affect the welding circuit.

Abstract: A drive shaft assembly includes an aluminum torque tube and aluminum yokes that are arc welded to the ends of the torque tube. The torque tube has a hollow cylindrical end portion at each end that is pressed onto an annular end portion of the respective yoke to form a narrow annular slit. The two parts are then arc welded together by forming an electric arc between the parts at the narrow annular slit and a consumable aluminum based electrode. The electric arc is sustained with a pulsed high amperage direct current to fill the narrow annular slit with aluminum based material from the consumable electrode in a single pass.
