Abstract: 433,935. Television. BAIRD, J. L., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, Westminster. Jan. 22, 1934, No. 18344/35. Divided out of 432,635, [Group XX]. [Class 40 (iii)] An intermediate-film system uses a cinematograph camera or projector of the type in which the film is illuminated continuously. The film is moved continuously and the object 2 is focused on it by a pair of lenses 1, 4, each of which in turn moves in the direction of motion of the film a distance corresponding with one frame height and at a velocity corresponding to that of the film. The lens is then returned to its original position while the other lens is operative. According to a modification the film is moved intermittently, and a stationary lens is used while the film is still and a moving lens while it is in motion, Fig. 2 (not shown). Specification 381,898 is referred to.

Abstract: 432,635. Kinematograph apparatus. BAIRD, J. L., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, Westminster. Jan. 22, 1934, No. 2171. [Class 97 (i)] Two lenses or lens portions are used in taking or projecting, one being stationary, and the other moving, while operative, in a direction corresponding to the direction of movement of the film, Fig. 1 shows a camera in which a fixed lens segment 1 produces an image in a film - frame 3 while the film is still, and a lenssegment 4, reciprocated by a cam 10, produces an image in a frame 5 while the film is being fed through the height of two frames. A shutter 8 is moved laterally by a cam 9 and springs 30 to cover the lenses alternately, and the lenses may be provided with rectangular masks so that the total lens area exposed remains constant during the shutter movement. The periods of film rest and movement may be equal, the lenses may be cut and arranged so that the line joining their optical centres is always parallel to the direction of movement of the film, and a stationary collimating lens may be used in conjunction with the lenses. A modification is described in which the shutter is moved by rotary strikers engaging arms on the shutter. The optical system used in a projector may comprise a condenser 34, Fig. 6, a field lens 36 producing an image of the condenser in the plane of the fixed and moving lenses 13, the image being large enough to cover the moving lens throughout its movement, and a collimating lens 12, the fixed and moving lenses being at their focal distance from the film 35, and the collimating lens being at its focal distance from the screen 26. Figs. 3 and 4 (ii) show details of construction of a projector comprising a stationary lens segment 38 and a lens segment 39 carried by a part-cylindrical mounting 42 on a slide 57 carrying a claw arm 44. A film-pressure pad 40 is carried by the slide, and a pad 41 having no vertical movement is also provided, the pads being respectively operative during the periods of rest and movement of the film. The slide is reciprocated vertically by a cam 63 which is mounted on a shaft 51 and engages a slide 62 carrying a pivot 64 engaging a lever 65 turning about a pivot 66 and jointed to the slide 57 by a slot and pivot 67. The position of the pivot 66 is adjustable by finger-screws 68, 69 to position the slide 57 relatively to the film and to vary the amplitude of movement of the slide 57. The shaft 51 is driven by a motor through worm gearing and carries a cam 55 moving the feed claw 43 into and out of the film, cams 45, 46, respectively causing the pads 40, 41 to engage and release the film, a cam 49 moving the shutter laterally, and gearing 52 driving film sprockets 37, 60. A field lens 71 is mounted on a pivoted carrier to facilitate threading. According to the Provisional Specification laterally separated lenses with prisms or mirrors may replace the lens segments. Specification 381,898, [Group XL], is referred to.

Abstract: 424,199. Television transmitters. WILSON, J. C., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, London. Aug. 12, 1933, No. 22548. [Class 40 (iii)] The image of an object to be transmitted is formed on a luminescent screen scanned by radiation, such as cathode or ultra violet rays, and associated with light-sensitive means to produce the picture signals. The fluorescent screen 4 of a cathode ray tube 5, on which the image 3 of the object 2 is projected, is scanned by a beam of cathode rays of intensity sufficient to produce saturation or approximate saturation of the fluorescent material. The change in the amount of light incident on the photo-electric cells 6, 7, during the movement of the beam is proportional to the change in the luminous intensity of the corresponding elemental areas of the image 3 since the cathode beam sequentially brings each area to, or approximately to, the saturation luminescence. The wave length of the exciting radiation is less than that corresponding to the maximum spectral sensitivity of the cells 6, 7 which may be replaced by a single annular cell combined integrally with the tube or mounted within the tube on the side of the screen 4, on which the electronic beam impinges.

Abstract: 423,854. Television. BAIRD, J. L., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, London. June 1, 1933, Nos. 15880/33 and 16317 /34. Divided out of 418,759. [Class 40 (iii)] In a television system in which the scanning- apparatus employs two moving members, one of the members comprises a plurality of series of optical elements of which each series is adapted to produce interdigitation of the sets of lines traversed by light-beams dealt with by the elements of the other scanning member. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the mirrors 6 of a relatively slow mirror wheel 3 are arranged in pairs so that the scanning lines on the screen 4 during successive revolutions of the faster wheel 2 are interdigitated by successive mirrors 6. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2, the beam reflected from the faster wheel 10 passes across adjacent mirrors of the mirror drums 12, 13, 14 which are mounted so that three separated scanning lines are formed on the screen 4. The minor wheel 10 may be rotated at the slower rate and the mirrors of the drums 12, 13, 14 are arranged so that each drum scans the screen 4 in a vertical direction with a space of two lines between successive lines and the scans of each drum relatively displaced by the width of one line. One or more of the rotating members may be a lensed disc in which the lenses are arranged on a circle but are not equally spaced about the circumference of that circle. According to the first Provisional Specification, suitable filters may be attached to successive elements of the slowly moving member to effect scanning for reproduction in colour.

[Class 40 (iii)] Dirt is excluded from the apertures of a scanning-device 12 by a protective envelope 2 which rotates with the scanning-device. Light passes to the apertures through transparent windows 11, which are so sunk in the material of the envelope that they do not spin off under centrifugal force. The short cylindrical envelope is mounted concentrically over the scanning-disc, and is made of two discs with their edges 21, 23 spun or moulded to overlap. In the case of an apertured scanning-drum, the windows are in the curved surface of the cylindrical envelope.

Abstract: 418,759. Television. BAIRD, J. L., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, London. June 2, 1933, No. 16097. [Class 40 (iii).] Scanning is accomplished by a combination of three or more mirror polyhedrons 4, 6, 7, 8 or lensed discs or drums. The polyhedron 4 rotates at a speed which is an integral multiple of that of the others. The polyhedrons 6, 7, 8 are so combined and angulated that as the scanning spot is moved from one to the next the spot on a screen 3 moves from the end of one scanning-line to the beginning of the next. When the slowly moving members comprise sets of lenses in a circle, certain of the sets have their optical centres outside their apertures to provide the change from one scanning-line to the next as described above. Alternatively the sets of lenses are provided with deflecting-prisms.

Abstract: 403,155. Light-valves. JACOMB, W. W., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 133, Long Acre, London. July 13, 1932, Nos. 19808, 26921, and 34534. [Class 40 (iii).] A Kerr cell 24 comprises electrodes spaced apart by glass sheets the edges of which are fused together. The whole is mounted in a glass vessel 2, Fig. 1, the wall of which may be either curved so as to focus the light-beam or flattened so that the beam passes through plane surfaces (Fig. 2, not shown). Copper wires 12, 14 pass through the pinch 4 and are connected with nickel wire supports 8, 10, to which opposite poles of the cell are screwed or welded at 18, 22. The vessel is, after preliminary exhaustion, filled through a pipe 6 with nitrobenzene, benzonitrile, nitrotoluene, carbon disulphide, mustard oil or senfol ; precautions against the promotion of bubbles are described. In the formation of the cell 24, from nine to eighteen annealed sheets of electrolytically prepared nickel, 0.002 inches thick, are washed in alcohol, ether and nitric acid and are burnished. They are spaced apart at their edges by glass slips 0.011 inches thick, and are clamped between two glass plates. The assembly so formed is subjected to a heating and annealing process as a result of which the glass plates and spacers are fused together at their edges and a rigid structure is formed as shown in Fig. 4. The nickel plates have lugs 48 which are connected together alternately. These may be on the same side of the plates as in Fig. 4 or alternately on opposite sides as in Fig. 1. The dielectric is purified and occluded gases are liberated by the application of a potential difference for some time before sealing. The electrostatic capacity of the cell may be reduced by shaping the plates and spacers so as to form a wedge-shaped path for the non-parallel beam of light (Fig. 5, not shown). The invention may be applied to the cells described in Specification 401,311. Specification 391,931 also is referred to.
