    Abstract: PURPOSE: A high speed image encoding method is provided to set up a threshold value which determines an encoding mode by predicting a rate-distortion optimum mode based on a sum of absolute transformed differences (SATD). CONSTITUTION: An image encoder calculates each sum of absolute transformed differences (SATD) of multiple candidate modes by using a Hadamard transformation (S310). The image encoder predicts a rate-distortion optimum mode based on the SATD (S320). The image encoder calculates a rate-distortion cost of a mode which has the smallest SATD value among multiple candidate modes (S360). The image encoder calculates a rate-distortion cost of a candidate mode except the mode which has the smallest SATD value.
