Abstract: A method for electroless metal deposition on a surface in a finely dimensioned space (e.g. the bore of a hollow fibre) comprises introducing into said space an electroless plating solution that has a nil or relatively low plating rate at normal room temperature, and there after heating said structure to an elevated temperature for a period sufficient to cause metal to plate on the wall surface. The steps of introducing and heating may be repeated as necessary to build up a required thickness.

Abstract: Una estructura que comprende una pluralidad de fibras huecas que están ensambladas para formar un cuerpo de material compuesto, estando dispuestas las fibras en pares, conteniendo una fibra de cada par un material resinoso sin curar como componente de una composición resinosa curable de dos componentes y comprendiendo la otra un agente de curado de la composición resinosa de dos componentes, siendo dicha una fibra de cada par conectable a un primer depósito de dicho material resinoso sin curar, pudiéndose suministrar desde dicho primer depósito dicho material resinoso sin curar a dicha una fibra de cada par bajo presión, y siendo dicha otra fibra de cada par conectable a un segundo depósito de dicho agente de curado, pudiéndose suministrar desde dicho segundo depósito dicho agente de curado a dicha otra fibra de cada par bajo presión, por lo que, en caso de que se produzca una fractura en cualquiera de las fibras, se produce la combinación de los dos componentes en la región de la fractura para permitir el curado de la composición y el sellado de la fractura.

Abstract: This invention relates to a structure which comprises hollow and solid fibre material embedded in a resin matrix where a repair facility is provided for repairing fractures in the fibres and in the resin matrix by the use of curable two-part adhesive compositions in some of the fibres of the structure. Single fibres (58) can be deployed within the structure where each single fibre (58) carries one component of the composition and the fibre itself is coated along its exterior with the second component (60) so that in the event of fracture of any fibres, the component parts of the adhesive composition can combine and cure in situ to fill and 'heal' the fracture. The invention has particular but not exclusive application to in 'flight' repair of aircraft components which are formed by such structures, and can also be used in the manufacture of fabric materials.

Abstract: Chiral composite material is made using an apertured plate (2) having apertures (3) therethrough corresponding to the desired location of Chiral elements (4) in the composite material. The plate (2) is located to overlie a substrate (1) with or without the intermission of spacer (10) which may be apertured in correspondence with the plate (2) or which may be ring like in form. The Chiral elements (4) are held in position by locating means such as a tab (5) which may be magnetic in, on or associated with the plate (2) and a first layer (8) of liquid host material is placed in the apertures (3) around the elemtns (4) against the substrate (1), allowed to set and the plate (2) removed. A second layer (9) of liquid host material is then applied to the set first layer (8) and allowed to set to produce the desired composite material.
