Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber designated for compensating for positive dispersion in optical telecommunications systems. A key characteristic of the invention is that the novel dispersion compensating waveguide, viz., a waveguide having large negative dispersion, contains no dopants, such as fluorine, which lower the refractive index of silica. A refractive index profile design which includes a high refractive index center segment (5) surrounded by a plurality of alternating high (6, 10, 13) and low refractive index segments, provides a dispersion compensation fiber which has the optical properties required for the system to be compensated without sacrificing bend resistance, increasing splicing loss, or elevating polarization mode dispersion.

Abstract: A single-mode optical waveguide fiber designed to limit power penalty due to four wave mixing and a method of making the waveguide is disclosed. Variations in properties, e.g., radius or refractive index, of the waveguide fiber core provide a total dispersion which varies along the length of the waveguide. The algebraic sum of products of length times total dispersion is controlled to a pre-selected value for each waveguide fiber which makes up a system link. Proper choice of total dispersion variation magnitude and sub-length results in a system link wherein a signal travels only short distances in waveguide portions having total dispersion near zero. However, the variation of the total dispersion provides a system link which has a pre-selected dispersive effect on the signal over a selected wavelength range. The dispersive effect on the signal can be chosen to be essentially zero. A number of techniques for fabricating DM fiber are also disclosed.

Abstract: A preform (94) for making an optical fiber is made by depositing silica soot (91) around a tube (90). Pieces of differing glass compositions (81, 82) are placed in the bore of the tube. This preform is then sintered, fused and collapsed. A draw blank is obtained which can be drawn into a low-loss, dispersion managed, single-mode optical fiber.

Abstract: Overclad fiber optic couplers are made by inserting the uncoated portions of a plurality of optical fibers into the bore of a glass tube, collapsing the tube midregion onto the fibers and stretching the central portion of the tube midregion. The present method utilizes a glass tube the bore of which includes a circular portion and a recess. A plurality of optical fibers are sequentially inserted into the tube by threading the coated end into the circular bore portion until the uncoated portion of fiber is centered in the tube. The uncoated portion of fiber is then transferred laterally into the bore recess. After all fibers have been threaded into the circular bore portion and transferred to the recess, a filler fiber is inserted into the circular bore portion. The resultant coupler exhibits low excess loss.

Abstract: Overclad fiber optic couplers are made by inserting the uncoated portions of a plurality of optical fibers into the bore (14) of a glass tube, collapsing the tube midregion (15) onto the fibers and stretching the central portion of the tube midregion. The present method utilizes a glass tube (10) the bore of which includes a circular portion and a recess. A plurality of optical fibers (21, 22) are sequentially inserted into the tube by threading the coated end into the circular bore portion until the uncoated portion of fiber (23, 24) is centered in the tube. The uncoated portion of fiber is then transferred laterally into the bore (14) recess. After all fibers have been threaded into the circular bore portion and transferred to the recess, a filler fiber (28) is inserted into the circular bore portion. The resultant coupler exhibits low excess loss.

Abstract: Of The Invention A method of making an economical fiber coupler comprising providing a glass tube having first and second end portions and a midregion, and a longitudinal aperture extending therethrough. Two suitably prepared glass optical fibers, each having a core and cladding, are disposed within the longitudinal aperture, the fibers extending beyond each end thereof. The fibers are held taut to effect a tension therein, and they are glued to each end portion. The midregion of the member is heated, collapsed about the fibers, and drawn to reduce the diameter thereof.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making a polarization retaining single-mode optical fiber. Longitudinal grooves are formed on opposite sides of a cylindrically-shaped core preform having a glass core surrounded by cladding glass. The core preform is inserted into a glass tube, the tube is shrunk onto the core preform, and the interface between the core preform and the tube is fused to form a solid preform having longitudinal apertures on opposite sides of the core. An etchant gas is flowed through the apertures to enlarge the apertures into holes having a substantially round cross-section. Inserted into each aperture is a stress rod formed of glass having a coefficient of expansion different from that of the cladding glass. The resultant draw blank is drawn to form a single-mode optical fiber having a core that is subjected to a stress-induced birefringence.

Abstract: This invention relates to a method of drawing twist-free optical fibers; it is particularly useful for drawing polarization retaining single-mode (PRSM) optical fibers having azimuthal inhomogeneities. In one embodiment, there is applied to the fiber, during the drawing thereof, a coating having a non-circular cross-section, the azimuthal inhomogeneity of the fiber being positioned in a substantially constant orientation with respect to the non-circular cross-section of the coating. In another embodiment, a plurality of fibers having azimuthal inhomogeneities are drawn through the same coater so that the azimuthal inhomogeneity of each fiber is oriented in a substantially constant relationship with respect to the the azimuthal inhomogeneities of the remaining fibers in the coating. The coated PRSM fibers are particularly useful for making polarization retaining fiber optic couplers.
