Abstract: Optical fibres for transmission in the medium infrared are manufactured using metal fluorides or chlorides obtained by vapour-phase reaction initiated at ambient temperature by ultraviolet radiation between an organo-metallic compound and a fluorine or chlorine containing gaseous reactant. The reaction products are subjected to thermal treatments in successive zones so as first to induce thermophoretic deposition in an axial direction onto an end of a preform and to expel vapour-phase reaction products, following which the deposited material is raised to melting point, cooled to vitrify it, the preform is annealed, and its opposite end is heated and drawn into a fibre. Core and cladding material may be formed and deposited in separate coaxial zones.

Abstract: Surface defects in silica optical fibres are reduced by enriching the external layer of the fibres with silica bonded carbon atoms, the carbon being obtained by a chemical reaction directly adjacent the drawing zone. Volume defects are reduced by rapidly cooling the drawn fibre after first bringing it to the vitreous transition temperature. Apparatus is provided which allows the method to be carried out during the drawing process.

Abstract: An apparatus for the continuous production of optical fibres from liquid phase reactants has two concentric inverted frustoconical vertical vessels into which the reactants for the core and the cladding are poured separately and forced downward by gas pressure through a first furnace which sets up a temperature gradient causing the reactants to form a porous solid preform. The inner vessel containing the core material terminates within the first furnace, but the outer vessel continues downwards through a second furnace in which the preform is vitrified after being dried by gas entering through a porous zone of the outer vessel and extracted with vapour phase reaction products through suction orifices above the porous zone. The downwardly emerging preform is heated and drawn into a fibre.

Carbon dioxide is used as an oxidizer and organometallic aluminum compounds are used to obtain the dopant; silica is obtained from organometallic silicon compounds or silicon tetrachloride.
