    Abstract: Establishing a connection between a paging unit and a standby unit in a channel hopping communications system includes activating the standby unit for an activation time period out of every standby time period. During each activation time period, the standby unit monitors a selected channel for receipt of a paging message. The selected channel is selected from a plurality of channels, and, for each subsequent activation time period, the selected channel is a subsequent one of the plurality of channels as specified by a hopping sequence and an internal clock. A page train is repeatedly transmitted from the paging unit to the standby unit, until a response is received from the standby unit. Each page train includes a plurality of paging messages, each paging message being transmitted on a different one of a subset of the plurality of channels. Selection of a page train for transmission by the paging unit may be based on an estimate of the standby unit's internal clock.

    Abstract: An FM demodulator circuit includes a filter (10) and a detector (14) for receiving a frequency modulated input signal and for providing a demodulated output signal. A tuning circuit (19) is provided for tuning the frequency characteristics of the filter and of the detector. A DC offset estimator (18) is connected to the output of the detector to produce an offset signal representing the estimated DC offset of the demodulated output signal, and to provide the offset signal to the tuning circuit. The tuning circuit is operable to tune the frequency characteristics of the filter and detector in dependence upon the offset signal.

    Abstract: The private radio network has base stations and mobile units in a cellular arrangement and using GSM style protocols. All of the base stations in the private network are roughly synchronised up to the multiple frame level. They transmit their beacons during the ideal frames of a connection. The mobile units measure the quality of these signals and pass this data to their base station. The base station uses the data to decide on handover timing. The base stations are linked, and the current base station advises the new base station of the frame number being used by the mobile. The new station may return a new frame number that is passed to the mobile. The transfer occurs in a single multiple frame.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for increasing the Q-value of an oscillator so that a net gain in the stability of the oscillators is obtained. In the apparatus and method, a plurality of units, which each include a passive frequency-selective circuit and an active amplifier, are cascaded and the required isolation between the passive frequency-selective circuits is maintained by the active amplifier acting as a buffer. As a result, interaction and loading is prevented between the passive frequency-selective circuits so that the net gain in the stability of the oscillator is achieved because the Q-value of the oscillator is increased.

The transceiver identifies a carrier frequency for use as a shared broadcast channel that is accessible by the transceiver and by the other transceivers, and broadcasts information on the shared broadcast channel, wherein the information informs the other transceivers of the presence of the transceiver. The transceiver also receives information from the shared broadcast channel, wherein the information informs the transceiver of the presence of the other transceivers.
