Abstract: In one aspect, the present invention provides a method for implementing a push type information service. The method may include: (a) receiving at a broker node an identifier associated with a mobile terminal;(b) receiving at the broker node a push message transmitted to the broker node from a service provider node; (c) receiving at the broker node criteria information identifying a criteria, the criteria information being transmitted to the broker node from the service provider node; (d) determining whether the mobile terminal meets the criteria, wherein this determining step is performed by the broker node and not by the service provider node; and(e) in response to determining that the mobile terminal meets the criteria, transmitting from the broker node to the mobile terminal the push message, thereby enabling the broker node to provide a push service such that no user information is revealed to the service provider.

Abstract: The present invention provides flexible radio access and resource allocation in a Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS). A UMTS Terrestrial access network (UTRAN), in response to a radio access bearer service request, allocates resources necessary to support a communication with a mobile radio. The UTRAN includes plural base stations for communicating with mobile radios over a radio/air interface using radio channel resources allocated by a radio network controller connected to the base stations. External network service nodes interfacing with external networks communicate with the UTRAN over a radio access network interface. The UTRAN provides a radio access bearer service to the external network service nodes, and radio access bearers are dynamically assigned to radio channel resources by the UTRAN. When establishing each bearer, the UTRAN flexibly maps the radio access bearer to physical transport resources through the UTRAN and radio channel resources over the radio/air interface.

Abstract: A system network and method improving handovers, particularly for reducing t he amount of inter-cellular transfer information stored in base station controllers or radio network controllers (205, 210, 215), is disclosed. Instead of storing routin g information for every possible inter-cellular handover at each control node, signaling network technology (220) is employed to effectuate communication of all relevant int er- cellular handover information between all of the control nodes, thereby coordinating routing information transference across a distributed system (200).

Abstract: A system for inhibiting the transmission of an access request message from a mobile station when either the system is incapable of granting access at the class of service desired by the mobile or access by the mobile at that class of service would increase the interference level of the target base station or a neighboring base station past its interference capacity. In one embodiment, each base station broadcasts a maximum data rate access parameter and any mobile receiving that parameter and seeking access at a greater data rate refrains from transmitting an access request message. In another embodiment, each mobile calculates from its path loss to the base station the power level it must transmit in order to gain access as well as the effect of that transmission on the interference level of both the target base station and neighboring base stations. If transmission at the required power level would increase the interference level of any base station past its maximum capacity, the transmission is inhibited. The system is most effective in CDMA mobile cellular radio systems.

Abstract: A sleep cycle of a mobile station may be optimally varied depending upon one or more conditions relating to the mobile station's operation. Based on one or more of those conditions, a variable wake up parameter is determined and used to establish times when the mobile station automatically leaves a lower power mode and enters a higher power mode to listen for a page. The mobile station's variable wake up parameter is provided to a radio access network and to one or more core networks to permit coordination of communications and services with the mobile station.

Abstract: The present invention provides flexible radio access and resource allocation in a Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS). A UMTS Terrestrial access network (UTRAN) in response to a radio access bearer service request, flexibly and efficiently allocates resources necessary to support a communication with a mobile radio. When establishing each bearer, the UTRAN flexibly maps or allocates the radio access bearer to physical transport resources through the UTRAN and radio channel resources over the radio/air interface. In an example embodiment, the transport between nodes and the UTRAN includes an ATM connection, and a radio channel over the air interface includes one or more CDMA spreading codes. The mapping is based on one or more parameters including for example one or more quality of service parameters and/or current traffic conditions. In addition, if the one or more parameters changes during the life of the connection, the connection may be switched to a more appropriate channel type.

Abstract: In connection with a diversity handling moveover procedure for a cellular system having soft handover, allocation of a replacement diversity handling unit in a target node occurs only after a moveover decision has been made by a source node. Initially, an original or source diversity handling unit at the source node performs connection combining and connection splitting functions for legs of a mobile connection routed through plural base stations serving a mobile station. In accordance with movement of the mobile station, the source node makes the movement decision. The moveover decision can be based on factors such as base station utilization and/or actual and/or predicted directional movement of the mobile station. In some embodiments, the diversity handling moveover procedure involves selection among plural nodes for situs of the replacement or target diversity handling unit.

Abstract: A DS-CDMA cellular system is provided that employs two forward link transmission modes in parallel. A conventional transmission mode broadcasts a pilot channel that can be used by a conventional mobile station to estimate and detect a dedicated traffic channel. The second transmission mode transmits (via a sectorized or narrow lobe antenna system) all information required by a new generation mobile station to estimate and detect a traffic channel dedicated to that mobile station. Consequently, DS-CDMA system operators can introduce the use of adaptive array antenna systems or distributed antenna systems with new generation mobile stations, without terminating the use of the conventional mobile stations.

Abstract: A connection is supported in a radio access network (RAN) between an external network to a UE using a first RAN node and second RAN node. The transmission rate from the first RAN node to the second RAN node is regulated based on a rate control request from the second RAN node. In one example embodiment, the first and second RAN nodes correspond to a serving radio network controller and a drift radio network controller, respectively. In another example embodiment, the first and second RAN nodes correspond to a radio network controller and radio base station, respectively. The rate control request is made based upon a congestion or load condition being monitored by the second RAN node. When the load condition is detected, the second RAN node requests the first RAN node to lower the transmission rate of information. Conversely, when the load condition is relieved, the second RAN node can request that the first RAN node increase the transmission rate of information. The rate control may be applied in both downlink and uplink directions.
