    Abstract: The compression of successive blocks of digital data is optimized by selecting between different compression algorithms or different data formats on a block-by-block basis. In one application, digitized interlaced video signals are processed for transmission in a compressed form. A set of pixel data presented in a field format is compressed to provide a first compressed video signal. The set of pixel data is also presented in a frame format and compressed to provide a second compressed video signal. Errors are evaluated in the first and second compressed video signals. The compressed video signal having the least error is selected for further processing. The technique is repeated for successive sets of pixel data and the selected signals are encoded to identify them as field formatted or frame formatted signals. The encoded selected signals are then combined to provide a compressed video signal data stream for transmission. Apparatus for receiving and decoding the signals is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for motion compensated coding of interlaced digital video signals. A first prediction error signal is obtained (74) indicative of the difference between a current portion from a field of a current video frame and a similarly situated first portion in the same field of a prior video frame. A second prediction error signal is obtained (76) indicative of the difference between the current portion and a similarly situated second portion in an opposite field of the prior video frame. A third prediction error signal is obtained (78) indicative of the difference between the current portion and an average of the first and second portions. One of the first, second and third prediction error signals is selected (80) to represent the current portion. Motion vector information is provided (72) to enable the current frame portion to which the selected prediction error signal corresponds to be reproduced by a decoder (Fig. 10).

    Abstract: In a broadcast communication system, a plurality of transmitters (T1, T2, ... TM) are located at different locations throughout a broadcast area for separately and synchronously broadcasting a common digital communication signal at a predetermined frequency over different signal paths, and a receiver (10, 12) located within the broadcast area receives the common digital communication signal separately broadcast by a plurality of the transmitters at the predetermined frequency over different signal paths and processes the received signal to reproduce the common digital communication signal without the effects of multipath and other channel distortions. The received signal is modified in relation to the broadcast signal by channel responses of the different signal paths; and the receiver includes an adaptive equalization filter (12) for processing the received signal inversely in accordance with a collection of the channel responses of the different signal paths to reproduce the common digital communication signal without the effects of multipath and other channel distortions. The accuracy of the filter in processing the received signal in accordance with the inverse of the collection of the channel responses of the different signal paths is enhanced by adapting the filter to reproduce a predetermined known common digital communication signal without the effects of multipath and other channel distortions.

    Abstract: A multiple serial access memory is provided. A dynamic random access memory (30) is addressed to input data thereto and output data therefrom. Rows of data are output from the array (50) in response to address signals (34, 36, 38) provided thereto. A plurality of serial output ports (44, 46, 48) is coupled to the output of the array for selectively latching different rows of data output from the array. The serial output ports (44, 46, 48) are clocked to output the latched data therefrom. In an illustrated embodiment, each of the serial output ports contains a shift register (62, 64, 66, ... 68) having a length equal to the width of the memory array (30). The shift register is responsive to a first timing signal (42, 52) for latching a row of data from the array (30). A second timing signal actuates the shift register to shift a row of latched data. A serial access selector (70) coupled to the shift register outputs a selected portion of the shifted data from the serial output port. The memory has particular application as the frame store for a motion compensated interframe image coding/decoding system.
