Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as a cation-forming agent for compounds such as cellulose, polyamine, etc., having high shelf stability, by reacting a tertiary amine with an epihalohydrin in the presence of a 1,3- dihalohydrin.
CONSTITUTION: A tertiary amine is reacted with an epihalohydrin in the presence of a 1,3-dihalohydrin to give the titled substance. 1,3-Dichloroisopropanol is preferable as the 1,3-dihalohydrin, an amount of it used is preferably 2W8mol% based on the raw material quaternary amine, a given amount of the 1,3-dihalohydrin is previously added to the epihalohydrin, or a fixed amount of the 1,3-dihalohydrin is added to the reaction mixture with time, and the reaction is carried out.
