Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce the subject substance in high yield while preventing the conversion of the raw material naphthalene into tar by reacting naphthalenes with ethylene as an ethylation agent in the presence of a heteropoly compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula II (R is methyl, ethyl or isopropyl; Et is ethyl; (m) is 0-7; (n) is 1-8; 1 =0.4mol based on 1mol of the raw material. The heteropoly compound is e.g. phosphotungstic acid, silicomolybdic acid or a compound produced by substituting a part or total of the proton of the above acid with an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal. The compound is supported on a carrier as necessary and dried at 100-300 deg.C.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substances by adding a solvent selected from hydrous or absolute methanol, hydrous ethanol and hydrous isopropanol to an alkylnaphthalene mixture consisting essentially of dimethylnaphthalene and recovering a solid substance. CONSTITUTION:A solvent selected from methanol containing 0-20vol.% water or hydrous ethanol and hydrous isopropanol containing 0.5-20vol.% water as a solvent is added to an alkylnaphthalene mixture, consisting essentially of dimethylnaphthalene and having >=30wt.% total content of 2,6- and 2,7- dimethylnaphothalenes and >=70wt/% content of the 2,7-isomer based on that of the 2,6-isomer and the resultant mixture is then stirred at ambient temperature. Alternatively, the mixture is heated and subsequently cooled to recover a solid substance and afford the 2,6- and 2,7-isomers in good yield. The solvent is used in a volume of 0.5-10ml based on 1g alkylnaphthalene mixture.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain simply the titled substance useful as agricultural chemicals, photographic chemicals, ultraviolet light absorbers, etc. in high yield, by reacting an aromatic compound except phenols with carboxylic acids in the presence of an ion exchange-type layered clay catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by the formula (R is H, alkyl, alkoxyl or halogen atom; m is 1, 2 or 3; X and Y are H together or hydrocarbon group necessary to form naphthalene ring or tetralin ring by linking to each other, or one of X and Y is phenyl and the other is H) is reacted with carboxylic acids in the presence of an ion-exchange-type layered clay catalyst at 150-250 deg.C to obtain the titled substance. As for the above-mentioned catalyst, synthetic mica, montmorillonite, vermiculite, hectorite, etc., are mentioned; however, the synthetic mica in which 20-100% of ion exchangeable interlayer ion is exchanged by a metal ion except alkali ion or proton is preferred. EFFECT:The catalyst has no corrosiveness and does not require waste-water treatment, etc.
