Abstract: A power control system for a cellular mobile telephone system in which system users communicate information signals between one another via at least one cell site using code division multiple access spread spectrum communication signals. The power control system controls transmission signal power for each cellular mobile telephone in the cellular mobile telephone system wherein each cellular mobile telephone has an antenna, transmitter and receiver and each cell-site also has an antenna, transmitter and receiver. Cell-site transmitted signal power is measured as received at the mobile unit. Transmitter power is adjusted at the mobile unit in an opposite manner with respect to increases and decreases in received signal power. A power control feedback scheme may also be utilized. At the cell-site communicating with the mobile unit, the mobile unit transmitted power is measured as received at the cell-site. A command signal is generated at the cell-site and transmitted to the mobile unit for further adjusting mobile unit transmitter power corresponding to deviations in the cell site received signal power. The feedback scheme is used to further adjust the mobile unit transmitter power so that mobile unit transmitted signals arrive at the cell-site at a desired power level.

Abstract: The invention relates to a system and a method for signal modulation in a spread spectrum communication system. Pseudo-noise sequences (PN) are generated by employing spread spectrum communication techniques, thereby creating orthogonality between the users, so that mutual interference is reduced, allowing a higher transmission capacity and better performance of the communication link. Using orthogonal PN codes, the cross-correlation is zero over a predetermined time interval, resulting in the lack of interference between the orthogonal codes, only the time synchronization of the time frames of the codes being required. In a specific embodiment, signals are transmitted between a cell-site (12 and 14) and mobile telephone units (16 and 18) using direct sequence spread spectrum communication signals. Pilot-, synchronization-, paging- and voice-channels are defined in a cell-to-mobile unit transmission link. The information communicated through the communication link channels, from the cell to the mobile telephone unit is generally encoded, interleaved and bi-phased shift (BPSK) modulated with orthogonal covering of each BPSK symbol but with quadrature phase shift (QPSK) modulation, for spreading the covered signals. In a mobile unit-to-cell transmission link, access and voice channels are defined. The information communicated through the communication link channels, from the mobile telephone unit to the cell, is generally encoded, interleaved, with orthogonal signalling and QPSK spreading.

Abstract: The dual band code division multiple access radio of the present invention operates on multiple frequencies simultaneously on either transmit or receive. The transmit path operates by splitting the transmit intermediate frequency (IF) path (103) and mixing the IF to two different transmit frequencies using two frequency synthesizers (140 and 145). The receive path (104) has two RF channels (116 and 117) that are mixed with the frequencies generated by the synthesizers (140 and 145) and summed into one IF strip. Thus the radio of the present invention can perform a soft hand-off between frequencies while communicating with both base stations simultaneously. Additional mixing paths and synthesizers can be added if it is desired to communicate with more than two base stations simultaneously.\!

Abstract: Packet data is transmitted at high speed from a base station to a mobile by first paging the mobile for a pending data transmission and measuring the C/I (signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio) of forward link signals from the base stations in the active set of the mobile. A base station of the active set is selected based on a set of parameters including the measured C/I and identified to the mobile which sends a data request message to the selected base station. The data packet portion is transmitted to the mobile from the selected base station at a data rate supportable by the mobile and in accordance with the data request message. The measurements and selection is performed at each time slot until the data transmission is completed to maximize the data transmission rate.

Abstract: The system is designed for telephone systems, especially in cellular mobile telephone systems with coding-divided multiple access. It overcomes the harmful attenuation without causing any undesired disturbances in the system. In the control system, every cellular mobile telephone and cellular centre has an serial, transmitter and receiver. The signal power transmitted from the cellular centre (12 & 13) and in the mobile unit (16 & 18) is measured. The transmitter power in the mobile unit (16 & 18) is tuned opposite to the power gains and reductions of the received signal. The signal power, transmitted from the mobile unit (16 & 18) and received in the cellular centre (12 & 14) is measured. A command signal is produced in the cellular centre (12 & 14) which is sent to the mobile unit (16 & 18) for following power adjustment of its transmitter in accordance with any power deviations of the power of the signal received in the cellular centre (12 & 14). A scheme for feedback is used for the subsequent adjustment of the power of the transmitter of the mobile unit (16 & 18), so that the signals transmitted by it should arrive in the cellular centre with the desired power level.
