Abstract: Dual functioning seals for use in forming a lubricant seal in a rotary rock bit comprise an annular elastomeric seal body 60 having a dynamic seal surface 54 and a static seal surface 56. The seal body 60 has an asymmetric axial cross-sectional geometry the dynamic seal surface 54 having a greater radius of curvature than the static seal surface 56. The dynamic and static seal surfaces may be formed from different elastomeric materials, with the dynamic seal surface 54 being formed from an elastomeric material that is harder and more wear resistant than that of the static seal surface 56. Differing cross sections are disclosed (see figs 5-7).

Abstract: A high performance rock bit journal seal is formed from a composite material comprising an elastomeric material and a nonelastomeric polymeric material. The polymeric material is preferably in the form of fibers woven into a sheet. The elastomeric material includes at least one lubricant additive. The composite seal material comprises a number of repeating sheets of polymeric fabric that are bonded together with the elastomeric material. In one embodiment, the seal includes a body formed entirely from the composite material, in which case both the static and dynamic seal surfaces are the same. In another embodiment, the seal includes a first body portion formed from the composite material, and a remaining body portion formed from a noncomposite elastomeric seal material seals formed from the composite seal material display enhanced wear resistance, reduced coefficient of friction, and improved high-temperature stability and endurance when compared to noncomposite seal materials, thereby both extending the useful life of seals formed therefrom formed and of rock bits that employ such seals.

Abstract: A rock bit for drilling subterranean formations has an improved dynamic O-ring seal for retaining lubricant around the rock bit bearings during operation of the rock bit. Such a bit has a plurality of journal pins, each having a bearing surface, and a cutter cone mounted on each journal pin and including a bearing surface. A grease reservoir is in communication with such bearing surfaces for maintaining grease adjacent to the bearing surfaces. The grease is sealed in with dynamic O-ring seals rotating against a sealing surface with a Vickers hardness of at least 1000 and vibratory burnished to have a surface finish in the range of from 5 to 32 microinches AA. Preferably, the sealing surface is formed on a seal ring interposed between the cone and journal. Preferably the sealing surface comprises a tungsten carbide composite sprayed onto the outside surface of a steel ring which is then welded to a journal.

Abstract: The invention discloses a drill bit that is assembled from a plurality of machined forgings that are welded together to form a unitary structure. Each forging comprises an upper body portion and a lower leg portion. The lower leg portion is machined to form a shirttail section and a journal section, which in turn is adapted to rotatively support a cone shaped cutter. In operation, the cutter is oriented to describe a circular path, the outer diameter of which forms the gage diameter of the bit. The upper body portion is machined to include a stabilizer lug extending radially outward to substantially the same diameter as that formed by the cutters. The lower section of the lug cooperates with a recessed portion of the leg to form a flow passage for enabling drilling fluid to more easily pass upward through the borehole annulus during operation. A plurality of polycrystalline diamond inserts are mounted within the surface of each stabilizer lug.

Abstract: INCLINED CHISEL INSERTS FOR ROCK BITS An inclined chisel crested insert is disclosed for use on the gage row of a cone for a rotary cone rock bit. The insert has different conical surfaces on opposite sides of the crown of the insert. An elongated conically shaped gage cutting surface of the insert provides point or line contact with a borehole wall as opposed to a full surface contact with the wall as is common with state of the art flat sided gage row inserts. This inclined chisel insert also has advantages over the symmetrical chisel type gage insert in that it is designed to provide increased crest length while providing the desired gage surface angle. The conically shaped gage row inserts with offset chisel crest are less prone to frictional heating due to the point or line contact design. As a result, the elongated conical gage cutting surface of the chisel crest insert minimizes gage insert wear and subsequent breakage by eliminating high cycle thermal fatigue.
