    Abstract: 1,223,969. Colour television tubes. SONY CORP. 9 April, 1969 [14 April, 1968], No. 18063/69. Heading HID. In a colour television receiver tube of the type wherein three co-planar beams diverge from a common focusing lens and are converged on to a shadow mask or the like by two pairs of deflection plates, the latter are curved in the direction normal to the plane of the beams to correct for raster errors. In Fig. 7 the three beams B R , B G , B B lie in a horizontal plane and the deflection plates PP 1 , QQI are divergently curved in a vertical plane. This corrects for raster errors (Fig. 3, not shown) caused by the outside beam following a longer path in the field of the magnetic deflecting yoke than the inside beam or the centre beam at large deflections; at zero vertical deflection (i.e. in the central positions of the beams as shown) the error in horizontal deflection may be corrected by a non-uniform scanning field but the error remains at large vertical deflections unless corrected as described. In modifications the inner plates P (Fig. 4, not shown) or the outer plates Q (Fig. 5, not shown) are planar. For correcting the opposite type of raster error the plates are curved in the opposite sense (Figs. 6 and 8, not shown). When there are two sets of convergence deflection plates the set nearest the magnetic deflection yoke should be shaped as described.

Means are provided for equalizing the cutoff voltages of the cathodes by equalizing the intensity of the electric field reaching the cathodes from the grids. Equalization preferably is obtained by making one or more of the apertures in the first and second grids of a diameter different from that of the other apertures, or by making the distances of one or more of the cathodes from the grids different from the corresponding distances of the other cathodes, or by a combination of both of these arrangements.

An electron gun, especially for a colour television tube of the " Chromatron " (Registered Trade Mark) type, comprises a tetrode system in which the aperture of the accelerating electrode G2 has a diameter d 2 at least twice, and preferably four times, the diameter d 1 of the aperture of the control grid G 1 . The main convergence system is a unipotential lens G 3 , G 4 , G 5 and both the accelerator electrode G 2 and focusing electrode G 4 are grounded to serve as conductors for spurious discharges. The diameters d 3 , d 3 1 of the apertures of first high voltage electrode G 3 are about twice the diameter d 1 and the diameter d 5 of the aperture of the second high voltage electrode G 5 is about three times d 1 . Specific dimensions are given. A pre-focusing convex lens is produced between accelerator electrode G 2 and first high voltage electrode G 3 and a concave lens in the vicinity of the aperture h 3 , the overall effect of the two lenses being weakly convex to assist prefocusing and to reduce spherical aberration.

    Abstract: A recording and/or reproducing apparatus for a tape type optical recording medium (1) has a transparent guide (2) on which guide tracks (3) are precisely formed. A scanning beam (4) is controlled so as to scan along the guide tracks (3) and is converged on the recording surface (1A) of the tape type recording medium (1). The accuracy of the recording tracks (3) on the tape (1) is equivalent to that of the guide tracks (3). In this way, recording tracks (3) can be precisely formed on the tape (1) without the step required in the prior art methods of pre-forming guide tracks on the recording medium (1).

    Abstract: SO898(S77P15) OPTICAL SIGNAL PLAY-BACK DEVICE WITH AUTO-FOCUSSING OF A LIGHT BEAM AT A RECORD CARRIER SURFACE In a signal play-back device having a substantially flat record carrier, for example, a record disc, provided with first and second oppositely facing reflective surfaces and a signal recorded as variations in at least the second surface, and an optical system in which a first lens directs a light beam, for example, a laser light beam, from a source thereof against the first record carrier surface for reflection by the latter and passage back through the first lens for focussing by the latter at an image point remote from the first record carrier surface, and a second lens effects a predetermined focussing of such image point of the light beam at the second record carrier surface for scanning the recorded signal variations, with the light beam reflected from the latter, and having corresponding variations in its beam energy, passing back through the second lens toward a light detector for providing an output corresponding to such variations in beam energy, and in which the first and second lenses have respective magnification factors proportioned relative to each other for maintaining the predetermined focussing of the image point at the second record carrier surface irrespective of movements of the latter toward and away from the second lens; a third lens is interposed in the path of the light beam between the second lens and the light detector and is dimensioned and positioned to focus, at the plane of a light-receiving surface of the light detector, a plane which is spaced from the second lens toward the third lens by a distance equal to the focal length of the second lens. As a result of such third lens, the light beam reflected from the second record carrier surface can be continuously directed at the light detector irrespective of the movements of the second record carrier surface toward and away from the second lens even when the axis of the light beam incident on the second lens deviates from the optical axis of the latter.

    Abstract: 1534025 Automatic control of focus of a light beam SONY CORP 22 June 1976 25907/76 Heading G3N A focus control system for use with an optical record carrier includes means for monitoring the distance of a reflective surface of the record from an object lens, a light source and a light path including a movable mirror whose position is moved in response to the monitored distance to keep the light beam in focus on the record. In the arrangement shown the capacitance between a recording surface 4 and fixed electrode 16 determines the output frequency of oscillator 15. A voltage derived from the output of the oscillator is compared in comparator 19 with a reference frequency voltage and the output signal used to energize coil 6 of the movable mirror assembly 5 and thus change the distance between lens 9 and mirror 7. A light source, which may be a laser, produces a beam of light which is reflected by semi-transparent mirror 11 through lens 9 on to mirror 7 to be reflected back through lens 9, mirrors 11, 12, 13 and lens 8 on to the reflective surface of the record. The reflected light is detected by detector 14 to produce an electric signal corresponding to the recorded signal. When the arrangement is used for recording a signal a modulating cell is included in the light path.
