Abstract: 24,923. Thomas, J. Nov. 1. [Cognate Application, 7425/14.] Refuse-destroying stoves; closed solid-fuel stoves ; grates.-A destructor stove for burning household, garden, and other dry refuse, or for heating purposes, consists of a vertical fire-chamber 8 with a conical or like combustion space 11 connected to the chimney 12. The chamber has also a removable air-jacket 13, or conduits or equivalent devices which conduct air to the space beneath the baffle 16. The fuel chamber proper consists of a cage of hollow bars 18 open at the top and bottom and conducting air to the smoke. Gas-rings 34, 37 may be fitted at the top of the bars 18 and between the baffles 35, 36 respectively, to facilitate the combustion of the material and the smoke. Some of the bars 18x are shortened to form a doorway 32 for the combustion space. The bars 18, 18 are assembled in rings 23, 24 which are supported by brackets 27, 28 formed by cutting and bending angle-irons.

Abstract: 19,489. Thomas, J. Aug. 26. [Cognate Application, 1796/13.] Dash-pots.-Relates to apparatus of the kind described in Specification 23,797/10 for regulating the admission of air to furnaces through a grid in the firedoor and a door in the fire - bridge under the control of a dash-pot, and consists in providing the dash-pot 8 with a needle valve 14, the upper end of which is fastened to a square or equivalently formed part 17 capable of longitudinal movement only through a guide 18 secured to the hollow piston-rod 7. Adjustment of the valve is effected by a nut 20, which engages with the upper screwed part of the valve and is rotatably mounted within an extension of the guide 18. The nut is prevented from moving longitudinally by a pin 22, which engages with an annular groove 23 in the nut. The valve may be locked in any desired position by a set-screw 25, and the nut and guide extension may be provided with an index and scale to facilitate setting the valve. The dash-pot is provided with a spigot 28, which engages with a split socket formed on a bracket secured to the furnace front, and is secured bv a bolt adapted to draw the split parts of the socket together.

Abstract: 21,135. Thomas, J. Sept. 12. Cam actuated multiple-delivery piston pumps; stroke, varying; valves, arrangement of. -A lubricating - pump has two pistons working in a cylindrical sleeve which is caused to oscillate on its axis, thus acting as a valve. In the longitudinal section, Fig. 1, the floor of the oil-reservoir A is formed with a number of barrels A'. Each barrel contains a sleeve B divided into two parts by the partition K, and two pistons C, C connected by a rod C operate in the cylinders thus formed. One end of the sleeve B has an oblique slot S, through which passes the projection T of the sliding carriage E. The sleeve is also provided with inlet ports M, M', and outlet ports O,O . The sleeve B is allowed a certain amount of end play, which can be adjusted by the screw D', thus varying the delivery while the piston stroke remains constant. The cam F that drives the carriage E is designed to give a uniform motion to the carriage, and is also provided with a projection X which moves the carriage a distance a little greater than the play of the sleeve. During this part of the stroke, the piston and sleeve move together, the piston afterwards moving uniformly in the sleeve.

Abstract: 22,851. Thomas, J. Oct. 7. Fixed - chamber apparatus for delivering from inverted bottles. Liquid passes through an orifice y in a cork washer w to a hole f in a rotatable tube c and fills the inner end of the tube when a plunger g is pulled out. The plunger has a projection j which presses against a sloping side q of the rotatable tube and turns the passage f out of register with the orifice y and into register with a slot x in the washer w, allowing liquid to pass into the space between the tube c and bottle neck a, a groove l in the plunger allowing passage of air. Thence the liquid passes downwards into the tube c again and out of an orifice t when the plunger g is pressed inwards. The plunger is prevented from turning by a rib h which passes through the orifice t in a cover r retained by a split spring ring s.

Abstract: 2243. Thomas, J. Jan. 30. Fire-extinguishing by steam.-Relates to a system of steam pipes and valves for use in extinguishing fires in ships and buildings. In an arrangement for ships, shown in part side elevation in Fig. 2 and cross-section in Fig. 3, steam from a boiler R or other source passes through a pipe C, which is provided with a valve 0 controlled by a rod P from the deck, and thence passes into a main pipe A, which runs along the bottom of the hull and is connected to branch pipes B leading to the various holds. On the pipes B are valves D controlled by levers and rods m. In a system for buildings, branch pipes leading to the rooms &c. are connected to a vertical pipe passing up the front or rear of the building from an horizontal main pipe near the ground, this main pipe being continued, if desired, through the length of a street or block of buildings. Taps are provided for draining off condensed steam. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 856/62, 2494/69, 4024/74, 4230/74, 2222/83, 806/86, 4026/93, and 22,546/96.

Abstract: 7791. Podmore, A. E., and Thomas, J. April 8. Incandescent gas lamps; reflectors.-In adapting inverted burners for use in street lanterns, a reflector is provided with a central opening for the passage of waste gases, and the gas regulator is accessible from the outside of the lantern. The gaspipe k is provided with an outside stop cock and a regulator l. The burner g passes through a hole h in the curved reflector b of porcelain or enamelled iron, and the tip f is placed below a hole e in the reflector. The regulator is shown in detail in Fig. 5 ; a milled head m actuates a screw x to operate a needle valve y in a nipple z. An additional stop cock n may be provided with the lever o outside the lantern. The usual air-supply regulator is shown with a screw rand thumb-piece s for rotating the sleeve g. The top c of the lamp is supported on bosses 1 so that an air passage is formed round the lamp. Two burners may be provided similar to the one shown.
