Abstract: Image coding and decoding methods are provided. A first flag indicates whether a predetermined extension standard of a predetermined image coding standard is used. When the first flag indicates that the extension standard is used, a second flag indicates whether a first scheme is used for coding and decoding a current block included in an image. The first scheme is included in the extension standard. When the first flag indicates that the extension standard is used, a third flag indicates whether a third scheme is used for coding and decoding the image. The third scheme is included in the extension standard. The second flag and the third flag are included in headers of different layers, with the first flag corresponding to each of the second flag and the third flag being included in each of the headers.

Abstract: An image decoding apparatus, method, and medium for decoding a current block included in a bitstream are provided. A first candidate, having a first motion vector that has been used to decode a first block, is searched for from one or more candidates. The first block is spatially or temporally adjacent to the current block. Two or more second candidates, each having a second motion vector being a zero vector, are derived when the first candidate is unavailable in the searching. A current block is decoded using derived candidates. The derived candidates include the two or more second candidates.

Abstract: By the moving picture coding method and the moving picture decoding method, it is possible to improve coding efficiency. The moving picture coding apparatus includes a merge block candidate calculation unit that (i) specifies merge block candidates at merge mode, by using colpic information such as motion vectors and reference picture index values of neighbor blocks of a current block to be coded and a motion vector and the like of a collocated block of the current block which are stored in a colPic memory, and (ii) generates a combined merge block by using the merge block candidates.

Abstract: An encoding method of encoding units included in a picture is provided. The encoding method generates a first flag indicating whether a removal time of encoded data from a buffer by a hypothetical decoder is set per unit. When the removal time is set per unit, a second flag is generated which indicates whether an interval between removal times of the units is constant. When the second flag indicates that the interval is constant, common-interval information is generated which is distinct from the second flag and indicates a constant time interval between the removal times of the units. A bitstream including the encoded data, the first flag, the second flag, and the common-interval information is generated. The first flag is included in video usability information of the bitstream. The second flag and the common-interval information are included in control information of the bitstream.

Abstract: An image coding method for coding image data on a block-by-block basis includes: segmenting a block including coefficients of frequency components, into groups corresponding to frequency ranges based on types of the coefficients, and determining a context corresponding to each of the groups; performing, for each of the coefficients, binary arithmetic coding on the coefficient according to a probability information item corresponding to the context, the context being corresponding to the group having the coefficient; and updating, for each of probability information items, the probability information item corresponding to the context, based on the coefficient included in the group corresponding to the context, wherein in the segmenting, the block is segmented into the groups with various numbers of coefficients.

Abstract: A non-transitory recording medium including a program is provided. The program causes a processor to divide a picture into tiles. The tiles are coded to generate pieces of coded data, each of which corresponds to a different one of the tiles. In this regard, a first tile of the tiles is coded with reference to coding information of an already-coded tile neighboring the first tile when a boundary between the first tile and the already-coded tile is a first boundary. The first tile is coded without reference to the coding information of the already-coded tile when the boundary between the first tile and the already-coded tile is a second boundary. A bitstream including the pieces of coded data is generated. The bitstream includes tile boundary independence information which indicates whether each boundary between the tiles is one of the first boundary and the second boundary.
