SOLUTION: This biaxially oriented polyester film having many fine protrusions formed on the ground surface portions, characterized in that the fine protrusions contain the protrusions having heights of 3 to 5 nm in the total protrusion number of 3,000,000 to 100,000,000 protrusions/mm2 and in that the average size of grains is 10 to 100 nm, when the height threshold value of the protrusions is 3 nm. The biaxially oriented polyester film is a monolayered film or a bi- or more-layered laminated film.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biaxially oriented polyester film which shows an extremely low degree of a dropout and an oligomer deposition on the surface of a film and is useful for a magnetic recording medium featuring an excellent handing property and a resistance to the chipping of a tape edge. SOLUTION: This laminated polyester film has a film layer (a layer A) which is composed mainly of at least one polymer selected from among a polypropylene terephthalate, a polypropylene naphthalate, a polybutylene terephthalate and a polybutylene naphthalate, formed on at least one of the surface layers. This film is characterized in that the Young's modulus in the width direction is 6 GPa or more and the Young's modulus in the width direction is higher by 1 GPa or more than the Young's modulus in the longitudinal direction and the number of coarse protrusions Hl on the surface of the film is 200 pcs or less/100 cm2.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biaxially oriented polyester film having excellent high output properties for use especially in digital video and high-density data. SOLUTION: This biaxially oriented polyester film is constituted of at least, a two layer structure that at least, it outermost layer (layer A) has 0.1-10 nm surface roughness Ra, 30-50% of crystallinity, 2.0% or less of quantity of extracted oligomer and 0.7 or more of polymer IV respectively of the layer A. Since this biaxially oriented polyester film is of at least a two-layer structure, and the polymer characteristic of at least one outermost layer of the film is specified, excellent output characteristic are obtained, so excellent characteristics sufficient for high density magnetic recording medium can be obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a film having a low coefficient of friction and improved in wearing resistance and handleability by extruding a thermoplastic resin containing inert particles into a sheet and biaxially stretching the sheet. CONSTITUTION: A thermoplastic resin (a) is melt-kneaded together with 0.001-0.3wt.% spherical inert particles having an average particle diameter of 5-2,000nm, an aspect ratio of 1.0-1.3, and a relative standard deviation of 0.6 or lower. The mixture is extruded into pellets containing the inert particles. These pellets are melted at a temp. not lower than the m.p. of the resin (a) but not higher than the decomposition point thereof, and are extruded into a sheet together with a thermoplastic resin not containing inert particles to obtain an unstretched film. This film is stretched in an areal stretch ratio of 9 or higher and then heated at 140-280 deg.C for 0.5-60sec. Thus, the objective film is obtained in which the average height of surface projections on at least one side is 10nm or larger and is 1/4 to 1/3 of the average particle diameter (b) of the inert particles and the number of projections having a height not higher than 1/3 of the diameter (b) accounts for 40-80% of the total number of all projections.
