An improved method for modifying the surface of an ocular implant material (10) by the gamma or electron beam irradiation induced chemical graft coating thereon of a monomer comprising N-vinyl-pyrrolidone, 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate or a mixture of the two to form a hydrophilic graft polymer coating, the improvement comprising pre-soaking the ocular implant material (10) in a monomer or a solution comprising a monomer prior to conducting the gamma- or electron beam-irradiation induced graft polymerization in a second solution of a monomer.
Abstract:
Sol-gel processing techniques are used to produce alkali-free bioactive glass compositions based on SiO2, CaO and P2O5. By varying the SiO2 content, a range of hydroxyapatite production rates can be obtained; conversely, varying the time of exposure to actual or simulated in vivo solutions permits use of a range of allowable proportions of SiO2. The sol-gel derived compositions can be chosen to achieve target values for thermal expansion coefficient, elastic modulus and volume electrical resistivity.
Abstract:
The subject invention concerns a novel bioherbicide and its use to control a major weed found in many fields in the Southern United States and in the Caribbean. Specifically, a novel Colletotrichum isolate in an agricultural composition can be used to effectively control purple nutsedge without adversely affecting field crops. Further, the novel isolate in a mixture with other biocontrol agents can be used to control nutsedge and other undesired vegetation, such as Florida beggarweed, sicklepod, showy crotalaria and coffee senna.

An intraosseous needle assembly includes an intraosseous needle (10) having a threaded shaft (12) with a passageway extending substantially therethrough, a solid and pointed tip (13) at one end thereof, the tip having a pair of concave identations (41), (42), creating cutting edges. At the opposite end of the shaft, or hub, the needle is adapted to couple with an appropriate gripping device. A handle is provided in the shape of a ball knob and is adapted to telescopically and grippingly receive the hub (11) of the needle. The hub and handle are both equipped with mutually engaging torque-transmitting surfaces.

A novel operon and plasmids comprising genes which code for the alcohol dehydrogenase and pyruvate decarboxylase activities of Zymomonas mobilis are described. Also disclosed are methods for increasing the growth of microorganisms or eukaryotic cells and methods for reducing the accumulation of undesirable metabolic products in the growth medium of microorganisms or cells.

Tissue surfaces and surgical articles involved in the surgery are coated with a solution of a hydrophilic, polymeric material prior to manipulation of the tissue during surgery. The composition comprises a solution of a polymeric material having a molecular weight of about 500,000 or above having a concentration of from about 0.01 to about 15 %, by weight.

Described are non-phytopathogenic Pythium oligandrum isolates having activity to control phytopathogenic Pythium spp. or control damping-off of a plant, by applying an effective amount of the non-phytopathogenic isolates to a plant or its situs. The isolates can be applicable to vegetable crops utilizing transplant systems. Also described are methods of using the isolates and novel genetic sequences identified from the isolates which can be useful in identification procedures.
