Abstract: An apparatus for ink contaminant drying includes a marker platen having a topside and a bottom side, and a plurality of heating elements located beneath the topside of the marker platen. The plurality of heating elements provides heating with respect to a surface of the marker platen, which prevents ink contaminants on the surface from remaining in a viscous fluidic state over a period of time.

Abstract: An aqueous ink printer includes two drying stages that enable coated substrates to be printed with aqueous ink images. The first drying stage dries substrates uniformly in the cross-process direction and the second drying stage dries substrates non-uniformly in the cross-process direction to enable only predetermined portions of the printed substrates to be dried. The predetermined portions of the printed substrates are aligned in a process direction with nip rollers or other printer components that engage the substrates after the substrates exit the second drying stage.

Abstract: An aqueous ink transfer process includes coating the surface of an image transfer member (ITM) with a coating composition to a first thickness, the coating composition including a hydrophilic composition and a surfactant, partially drying the coating composition to reduce its thickness and then applying aqueous ink onto the coating composition. The coating composition in the vicinity of the applied ink swells by absorbing water from the ink, and can further exhibit reduced adherence to the ITM. The ink is partially dried and then transferred onto a substrate.

Abstract: A solid blanket receives a flood layer of very thin (e.g., about 10 μm or less) image receiving UV curable coating, which may be a clear, substantially clear, or tinted UV ink. A lower viscosity digital ink image may then be printed on top of the flood layer, for example by jetting UV ink on top of the flood layer. The lower viscosity UV digital ink sits on top of the thicker UV curable coating and maintains its location by surface tension interaction with the coating. The combination of ink and coating is then partially cured to a tacky state at which point it is transferred to print media via a conformable pressure nip. Since the lower viscosity jetted inks are not responsible for directly wetting the media, media latitude widens greatly. Further, no dampening fluid or fountain solution is needed to aid the transfer or the imaging.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are sacrificial coating compositions comprising at least one polyvinyl alcohol; at least one waxy starch; at least one hygroscopic agent; at least one surfactant; and water, wherein the ratio by weight of the at least one waxy starch to the at least one polyvinyl alcohol is at least two to one. In certain embodiments, the at least one polyvinyl alcohol has a degree of hydrolysis of at least about 95%, such as at least about 98%, or at least about 99.3%. In certain embodiments, the viscosity of the at least one polyvinyl alcohol in a deionized water solution at 20° C. ranges from about 30 cps to about 80 cps, wherein the solution contains 4% by weight polyvinyl alcohol relative to the total weight of polyvinyl alcohol and deionized water in the solution. Also disclosed herein are methods of making a sacrificial coating composition.
