    Abstract: Method of manufacturing a workpiece of any given cross-sectional dimensions from an oxide-dispersion-hardened nickel-based superalloy available in the form of coarse-grained longitudinally directed columnar crystals by connecting previously very finely machined workpiece parts derived from a semi-finished product by diffusion-bonding using hot isostatic pressing, the workpiece parts being first heat-treated under a protective gas in the temperature range of 50.degree. to 100.degree. C. below the recrystallization temperature, under a pressure p.sub.k of not more than 5 MPa with the machined surfaces to be connected joined together, the workpiece then being heated at least to a critical temperature T.sub.K, above which no further cold working takes place, and the pressure then being gradually increased to the diffusion bonding pressure p.sub.max of 100 to 300 MPa with simultaneous increase in temperature are a heating rate of not more of 2.degree. C./min to the diffusion bonding temperature T.sub.D of 0 to 50.degree. C. below the recrystallization temperature, this condition being maintained for 1 to 24 hours. Safe variant: only raise the pressure when T.sub.D has been reached!Application: gas turbine blading of large dimensions.

    Abstract: A component, such as a turbine disk, made from a metal or metal alloy which has been processed to display superplastic properties at elevated temperatures, is diffusion bonded to a component or components, such as turbine blades, made from another metal or metal alloy, by disposing the components in a press with the surfaces to be bonded in mating contact. Moisture and oxygen are removed from between the surfaces. Heat and pressure are then applied, such as by forging at an elevated temperature or by hot isostatic pressing, to cause superplastic deformation of at least one of the components at the bonding surfaces. The heat and pressure are held sufficiently long to diffusion bond the surfaces. The new integral assembly is then heat treated to obtain desired properties. Consistently good diffusion bonds are achieved by this method.

    Abstract: An opto-electronic apparatus for sensing the position or inspecting the condition of a target, which is capable of at least partially reflecting light in a scattered manner, includes an incident light source and means to direct light from the source in a narrow incident beam onto the target along an incident beam axis. A photoelectric sensor, which includes light collecting and focusing means as well as photosensitive means for receiving the focused light, provides for collecting and focusing the reflected scattered light along a reflected light axis of the light collecting and focusing means to the photosensitive means which provides an output signal including a portion which is a function of displacement of the focused light from a reference of the photosensitive means. Such reference represents the position of the axis intersection between the incident beam axis and the reflected light axis of the light collecting and focusing means. Also included in the apparatus is sensing means responsive to the output signal of the photosensitive means to sense displacement of the target, along the incident beam axis, in respect to the axis intersection.

    Abstract: To rebuild the interior of a shell of a volute-type centrifugal dredge pump, a radial arm carrying a welding torch swings about the axis of the shell to repeatedly traverse the interior of the shell and automatically shifts the welding path at the end of each traverse. The radial arm advances or retracts radially as it rotates to follow the eccentricity of the volute configuration. The advance or retraction of the radial arm in response to its rotation is accomplished by a sprocket chain that walks around the periphery of a fixed sprocket on the axis of rotation, the diameter of the fixed sprocket being selected in accord with the eccentricity of the volute configuration.

    Abstract: A method for fastening by brazing (hard-soldering) the blades of a rotor for a hydrodynamic torque converter or the like, in which the blades are fastened with respect to an inner shell by means of lugs which are extended through corresponding slots in the inner shell and are thereafter bent over; in the assembly, the blades are fixed in the given position in an outer shell by one circumferential clamping band each whereafter the inner shell is assembled by extending the lugs through the slots thereof and the lugs are thereafter bent over; a wire ring of soldering or brazing material is then applied at least within the joint area of the outer clamping band with the outer shell and the assembly is then heated, preferably in a protective gas atmosphere to a temperature above the melting temperature of the soldering or brazing material; after the soldering or brazing material has run into the gaps and cracks the assembly is then cooled.
