Abstract:
Olefin/alkenyl alkylate copolymers with ester- or carbonyl-linked side chains which may be substituted with groups such as nitro, dialkylamino, dialkylamido, dialkylammonium carboxylate or alkoxycarbonyl. Polymers (P) based on olefins and alkenyl alkylates, with molecular weights of 500-25000 and comprising at least one unit of formula (I): R1, R'1, R1 = H or 1-10C alkyl; R2 = H, 1-20C alkyl, 6-10C aryl or OR'2, with the proviso that R1 and R2 are not simultaneously H; R'2 = H or 1-6C alkyl; G, G' = -OC(O)-, -C(O)O- or -C(O)-; R3 = 1-13C alkyl; R5, R6 = 1-13C alkyl, or R5 + R6 may form a double bond with the two linking carbons, or R5 + R6 may form a saturated, unsaturated or aromatic 6-10C ring (optionally substituted with 1-3 groups of type Z other than H); Z = H, NO2, NR2, CONR2, COO NH2R2 or COOR, with the proviso that R5 and R6 together form a ring system as above when Z = H; R = 1-24C alkyl; (x+y) = 0.60-0.98, where x or y can be zero; z = 0.004-0.38; t/z = more than 0.02 and less than 4 Independent claims are also included for (1) a method for the preparation of (P) by radical polymerisation of the starting monomers in the appropriate mol ratios; (2) a method for the preparation of these polymers by: (i) making a functionalized polymer either by direct copolymerisation of olefin(s) and unsaturated monomer(s) with primary alcohol or hydroxyl group(s) or indirectly by copolymerisation of olefins with hydrolyzable comonomers (such as esters) followed by hydrolysis of the ester function: and (ii) esterification of the free OH groups with suitable reagents; (3) compositions consisting largely of hydrocarbon fractions (especially middle distillates, biofuels, synthetic gas oils, fuels emulsified with water and/or water/alcohol mixtures, or polyols) and minor amounts of (P); and (4) a method for the production of these compositions by mixing the components.
