This invention discloses an apparatus for a global network communicator including an application-specific communications device suitable substantially only for global network communications and including a global network application specific user interface, network protocol processing circuitry operative for communication with the global network and for formatting data to a required protocol employed by the global network and for translating data received from the global network to a format acceptable to the user interface, a communication line interface interconnecting the network protocol processing circuitry to the global network and including logical and physical interface apparatus and modulation and demodulation apparatus for information transmitted to the global network and information received from the global network respectively and network access activation circuitry for initiating communication between the communicator and the global network.

This invention, called an Information Router, holds a microprocessor-based control unit that is designed to be able to connect to one or more computers, a telephone, one or more telephone lines and one or more printers. The control unit has a built-in, afterwards added and/or the ability to attach an external, document scanner (14) and it can also be equipped with an internal data- and fax-modem (3). The Information Router can help attached external units to be used selectively for copying from scanner to printer, for receiving incoming and sending outgoing telefaxes and to print out and input data to/from an attached external computer.

A facsimile document enhancement system is disclosed. In one embodiment of the present invention, a document that is electronically transmitted in a standardized facsimile format is received at a network. The network enhances the received faxed document and transmits the enhanced document to the intended recipient. The document is received by the intended recipient on standard facsimile receiving equipment.

An apparatus (100) links a fax machine (120) to a telephone network (126) and a computer network (139). The apparatus (100) allows the user to selectively route facsimile transmission over a computer network (134, 139, and 146) to reduce long distance transmission costs. A key pad (112) and a display (114) are provided for entering destination addresses and providing visual feedbacks to the user. When transmission over the telephone line (125) is requested, the apparatus (100) directly links the fax machines (120 and 134) over a telephone system (126 and 132). However, if the fax transmission is to be transmitted over a WAN (139), including the Internet, the apparatus (100) intercepts the facsimile transmission, converts the information into a suitable electronic format for attachment to an electronic mail, and routes the transmission to the destination (152) over a WAN (139) or Internet to reduce long distance fax transmission charges from the telephone company. The apparatus (100) can also accept electronic mail and converts them into an acceptable format for reception by conventional fax machines.

An adaptor (300) for a moving picture video camera (10; 20) is provided with an input (301; 303) for receiving a moving picture video signal from a moving picture video camera (10; 20). The adaptor (300) also includes a compressor (330) connected to the input (301; 303) to extract a selected picture from the moving picture video signal and to compress the extracted picture. A bidirectional serial interface (340) is connected to the compressor (330) to serially receive data from an external source (120) and to output the compressed extracted picture generated in the compressor (330). An adaptor (300) is also provided for receiving an analog video signal, compressing it and outputting a digital compressed video signal.
