A reading system includes a computer and a mass storage device including software comprising instructions for causing a computer to accept an image file generated from optically scanning an image of a document. The software converts the image file into a converted text file that includes text information, and positional information associating the text with the position of its representation in the image file. The reading system has the ability to display the image representation (61) of the scanned image on a computer monitor and permit a user to control operation of the reader by with respect to the displayed image representation of the document by using the locational information associated with the converted text file. Also described are techniques for dual highlighting spoken text and a technique for determining the nearest word to a position selected by use of mouse or other pointing device operating on the image representation as displayed on the monitor.

A plurality of terminals are connected together through a network. An image read/input device is connected through the network to read an image, convert it into electronic image information and input it. A temporary storage device temporarily stores electronic image information inputted from the image read/input device. When a request for transferring image information is received from a terminal, a conversion device converts image information stored in the temporary storage device based upon the attribute information of the terminal which is the source of the request. A transfer device transfers the image information converted by the conversion device to the terminal which is the source of request through the network.

PURPOSE: An Internet facsimile that offers a voice mail function is provided to transmit and receive a voice message along or together with a facsimile document using an e-mail transmission and reception method. CONSTITUTION: A facsimile for transmitting information through the Internet(31) includes a scanner(20), a voice signal processor, a signal converter(21), and a signal transmitter. The scanner scans a document to be transmitted. The voice signal processor converts a voice message to be transmitted into digital voice data. The signal converter converts the scanned document data and/or the digital voice data into the form that meets e-mail transmission protocol. The signal transmitter transmits the converted document and/or the voice message through the Internet. The facsimile further includes a reproduction unit for reproducing a received document and/or voice message.
