    Abstract: PURPOSE: A washing machine and a control method thereof are provided to increase efficiency of washing by adjusting the number of cleaning processes according to contamination of water received in a drainpipe detected by a pollution level detection part. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine includes a water tub, a drainpipe, a first drainage valve(32), a pollution level detection part(22), a control part, and a water level sensor(52). The drainpipe receives the predetermined amount of the drained water. The first drainage valve is equipped in the drainpipe. The pollution level detection part detects a contamination level of the water received in the drainpipe. The control part controls the number of washing processes based on the contamination level of the water. The pollution level detection part detects a water level of the water tub. The control part stops a drain process by adjusting the first drainage valve.
