Abstract: Polymers of alpha-methyl styrene or nuclear-substituted alpha-methyl styrene are made by polymerizing the monomer alone or in admixture with another monomer, at a temperature between -100 DEG C. and +60 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali metal and/or an alkali metal hydride and a cyclic ether and/or an acetal. Graft polymers may be made by adding another monomer to the polymerizable mix after the completion of the polymerization of the alphamethyl styrene or nuclear substituted styrene. The nuclear-substituted monomers may be o, m, or p-methyl alpha-methyl styrene, 2,4-dimethyl-alpha-methyl styrene, para-isopropyl-alpha-methylstyrene, para -isopropenylalpha-methyl styrene, or paravinyl-alpha-methylstyrene. The metals may be sodium, p potassium, or lithium, mixtures of the metals, or alloys. The hydrides may be sodium, potassium, or lithium, or complexes such as Na(AlH4). Specified cyclic ethers and acetals are tetrahydrofurane, dioxane, dimethyl, diethyl and benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal. In the formation of graft polymers the other monomer added may be styrene, a nuclear alkylated styrene, butadiene, isoprene, or vinylcarbazole. If desired after one graft has been made, another monomer may be added e.g. to give chains of -poly-alpha-methylstyrenepolybutadienepolystyrene. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of additional inert diluents such as pentane, hexane, octane, benzene, or toluene.
