    Abstract: An apparatus for determining the actual speed and maximum safe speed of a centrifuge rotor (10). A single circular array (12) of equally speed coding elements (12a-12f) of two clearly distinguishable types is attached to the rotor. A single detector (14) responsive to the coding elements produces an output signal that varies in accordance with both the number and type of the coding elements. A first circuit network (18) is responsive to the number of coding elements encountered per unit time, without regard to type, to produce an actual speed or tachometer signal. A second circuit network (40) is responsive to the number of coding elements of each type encountered during each revolution of the rotor, without regard to the speed thereof, to produce a rotor identification signal that is indicative of the maximum safe speed of the rotor.

    Abstract: An apparatus for removing liquid contaminants from the oil sump (46) of a vacuum pump (10). A liquid separator (30) mounted on the housing (16) of the pump connects the interior or the pump housing to the atmosphere through a liquid trap (52). An inlet passage (32) through the separator connects a source of purging air to the interior of the pump housing, causing the air therein to flow through the liquid trap to the atmosphere. Because outflowing purged air is cooling by inflowing purging air, oil is selectively retained within the pump housing.

    Abstract: Mirror scan control for driving a movable mirror of an interferometer in an infrared spectrophotometer, with constant scan velocity and accurate position determination, using a laser (18) emitting a two frequency beam, a standard Michelson interferometer (13) a reference signal synthetizer (54).     Abstract: A stabilizing bearing designed to selectively operate to provide lateral support to a small diameter drive shaft (18) used in a small ultracentrifuge. The stabilizing bearing (40, 42) is preferably operated by the use of a solenoid (38) to move the bearing (40) into place to provide lateral support to the thin drive shaft (18) when it might otherwise flex at low speeds, causing vibration and possible detrimental effects to the desired centrifugal separation of the fluid sample in the rotor. The activation of the stabilizing bearing is automatic in response to a specified speed parameter of the drive shaft.

    Abstract: The method allows samples to be eluted automatically utilizing one of a plurality of different programs. Automatic analyzer control allows the operating conditions under which a sample is eluted to be selected prior to the elution without the necessity of employing a separate program to make each change of elution procedure. The column is equilibrated to starting conditions for a particular elution procedure and the sample is eluted through the column under that procedure. The column is then regenerated and the controller searches the analyzer memory to sense a change in procedure. If a change in elution procedure is detected, then the column is equilibrated to the starting conditions for that different procedure and the sample or samples are then eluted.

    Abstract: Appareil de commande de la température pour un réacteur à température élevée dans un instrument analytique du type dans lequel un agent de réaction de développement est ajouté à un courant d'écoulement faisant partie du procédé de détection.
