A process for the substitution of one or more alkylmercapto groups by chlorine atoms in 2,4,6 - tris - alkylmercapto -; 2,4 - bis - alkylmercapto - 6 - chloro - or 2 - alkylmercapto - 4,6- dichloro - s - triazines, comprises treating the alkylmercapto - s - triazine, individually or in admixture, with chlorine and/or a chlorinating agent, optionally at reduced pressure, in such a quantitative ratio that there are at least 2 available chlorine atoms for every alkylmercapto group which it is desired to replace.

    Abstract: Novel triazine derivatives of the formula in which X represents a halogen atom or a -CN, -N3, -OR, -SR or -SCN group and R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen atoms or C1- 6 alkyl groups, are prepared by reacting a cyanuric halide with an appropriate diaminosulphone, an amine R1NH2 and, if desired, an alkali metal alcoholate or mercaptide, further reacting a mercapto-substituted product with cyanogen chloride to form a corresponding thiocyanate, or replacing the alkali metal alcoholate or mercaptide reactant with a tertiary amine and reacting the resulting quaternary compound with an alkali azide or cyanide to form corresponding azides or cyanides.ALSO: Herbicidal compositions contain as the active ingredient triazine derivatives of the formula: in which X represents a halogen atom or a -CN, -N3, -OR, -SR or -SCN group and R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen atoms or C1-6 alkyl groups.

    Abstract: New heterocyclic thiocyanates, with the exception of 2-thiocyanato benzthiazole, of the general formula wherein R1 and R2 which may be the same or different are hydrogen, C1 to C5 alkyl, chlorine, bromine, nitro, -O-alkyl or -NHCO-alkyl, and X is -S-, -O- or >NY and Y is hydrogen or alkyl, where the term alkyl means C1 to C5 alkyl radicals, are prepared by an equimolar amount or up to 10% excess of cyanogen chloride or bromide in one lot to an aqueous solution of and alkali metal or ammonium salt of the corresponding thiol of the formula at a temperature of 0-10 DEG C. or by reversing the order of adding the reactants. The process is also applicable to 2-thiocyanato benzthiazole, 2-thiocyanato -5- chlorobenzoxazole, 2-thiocyanato -4- methylbenzthiazole and 2-thiocyanato -6- methylbenzthiazole are claimed per se. The compounds are useful as fungicides (see Division A5). In the numerous examples the preparation of compounds carrying the substituents specified and having also the imidazole ring are described. U.S.A. Specification 1,763,325 is referred to.ALSO:Fungicidal agents effective against alternaria brassicae contain new heterocyclic thiocyanato compounds of the general formula where R1 and R2 which may be the same or different are H or C1 to C5 alkyl, Cl or Br or NO2 or O-alkyl or NHCO-alkyl, alkyl meaning C1 to C5, and X represents -S-, -O-, or >N-Y, where Y is H or C1 to C5 alkyl, with the exception of 2-thiocyanato benzthiazole (see Division C2) as solutions, dispersions or dispersible powders. Specification 955,512 is referred to.ALSO:A herbicidal agent contains as active constituent at least one derivative of s-triazine of the general formula: in which R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or alkyl groups which may be substituted by chlorine atoms; R4 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl; X is an oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen bridge between which and the radical R4 there may be an -SO2 group; Y is chlorine or the group -CCL3. The herbicidal agent may also contain a fungicidal and/or insecticidal substance or an adhesive, e.g. casein, alginates and size. The compounds may be used in an aqueous dispersion, in an organic solvent, as an aqueous emulsion in an organic solvent, or applied to a solid carrier substance.
