Abstract: The invention relates to a method for assembling FEC frames for a sequence of groups of coded media packets. In order to reduce a buffer delay at a decoding end (15), it is proposed that the FEC frame is aligned with the groups of media packets. To this end, a number of next subsequent groups are determined, which fit completely into a FEC frame. All coded media packets associated to this determined group or groups, if any, are selected for the FEC frame (step 202,402). Then, the selected coded media packets are encoded to obtain at least one FEC packet for the FEC frame (step 206,406). For fixed FEC frame structures, moreover the introduction of padding packets as additional media packets, if required, is proposed.

Abstract: An improved system and method for implementing efficient decoding of scalable video bitstreams is provided. A virtual decoded picture buffer is provided for each lower layer of the scalable video bitstream. The virtual decoded picture buffer stores decoded lower layer pictures for reference. The decoded lower layer pictures used for reference are compiled to create a reference picture list for each layer. The reference picture list generated by the virtual decoded picture buffer is used during a direct prediction process instead of a target reference list to correctly decode a current macroblock.

Abstract: A system and method for signaling and indicating track relationship information in media files. The present invention provides a mechanism for signaling the information of layered track groups and the information of MDC track groups, as well as a mechanism for signaling track relationship information in an efficient way. In local playback or unicast streaming applications, to select an independently decodable track for a certain media type, the information of alternate track groups is first found via the track relation box, and one track is selected from an alternate track group for the media type. If stream switching is desired, the switching track group information is found via the track relation box. In multicast applications with scalable or MDC streams, the tracks in a layered or MDC group are found via the track relation box and selected among all the layered or MDC groups.

Abstract: The invention discloses a method of improving the playback of streamed media on a client device by overcoming problems caused by variations in the transmission delay of packets due to network and transport protocol operation and variations in encoding/server specific delays. In an embodiment of the invention, a client device has a decoder (120) and a pre-decoder buffer (110) which receives streamed packets from source server via a packet network. The pre-decoder buffer is variable in size and has a variable initial buffering time for receiving the transmitted packets from the source server prior to decoding in the decoder. The initial buffering time and pre-decoder buffer size can be dynamically adapted for improved playback performance by the source server. In a further aspect of the invention, a post-decoder buffer operates in conjunction with the pre-encoder buffer to reduce decoding-related delay variations.

Abstract: A system, method and computer program tangibly embodied in a memory medium for implementing motion skip and single-loop decoding for multi-view video coding. In various embodiments, a more efficient motion skip is used for the current JMVM arrangement by 8x8 or 4x4 pel disparity motion vector accuracy, while maintaining the motion compensation process that is compliant with the H.264/AVC design regarding hierarchical macroblock partitioning. Adaptive referencing merging may be used in order achieve a more accurate motion skip from one inter-view reference picture. In order to indicate whether a picture is to be used for motion skip, a new syntax element or syntax modification in the NAL unit header may be used.
