Abstract: Relatively thin, collapsed, i.e. unexpanded, polymeric foam materials that, upon contact with aqueous body fluids, expand and absorb such fluids, are disclosed. A process for consistently obtaining such relatively thin, collapsed polymeric foam materials by polymerizing a specific type of water-in-oil emulsion, commonly known as High Internal Phase Emulsions or "HIPE", is also disclosed.

Abstract: In the present invention there is disclosed a deflated polymeric foam material, which after contact with aqueous body liquids expands and absorbs these liquids wherein said polymeric foam material comprises hydrophilic, elastic, non-ionic polymeric foam material of interconnected open cells. This polymeric foam material specific surface area is at least 0.025 me2/cme3, based on the polymeric foam material volume, preferably at least 0.05 me2/cme3, contains at least 0.1 percent by weight of toxicologically acceptable, hygroscopic, hydrated salt, and at least 0.5 percent by weight of non-ionic, oil-soluble emulsifying agent causing the polymeric foam material surface to be hydrophilic. In deflated state the expansion pressure of the invented material is 30 kPa or less, preferably from 7 to 20 kPa and density thereof, based on dry matter, ranged within 0.05 to 0.4 g/cme3, in expanded state, at temperature of 31.1 degC and when saturated to its free absorption capacity with synthetic urine with surface tension (65 plus/minus 5).10e-5 N/cm, its density ranges within 10 to 50 percent, preferably from 10 to 30 percent of the density based on dry matter in deflates state, whereby the number average size of the cells thereof is 50 microns or less. In the invention there is further described an absorption article containing such material as well as process for preparing thereof.

Abstract: Disclosed is a shaped absorbent core suitable for absorbing and retaining aqueous body fluids. The absorbent cores comprise a front panel and a back panel. The front and back panels are made from fluid absorbent material, and each has an inner end, an outer end, and two sides. The inner and outer ends of each front and back panel have a length, with the inner end of each being shorter than the outer length of each. The front and back panels may comprise multiple layers of absorbent material. The absorbent cores also comprise a center section made from fluid absorbent material having first and second ends. The first end of the center section is in fluid communication with the front panel by overlapping the front panel intermediate the front inner and outer ends, and the second end is in fluid communication with the back panel by overlapping the back panel intermediate the back inner and outer ends. A method of preparing a shaped absorbent core comprises the steps of providing at least one continuous rectilinear web of first absorbent material having a longitudinal axis and a pair of lateral edges defining a first width. A continuous rectilinear web of second absorbent material having a longitudinal axis and a pair of lateral edges defining a second width wider than the first width of the first absorbent material is formed with opposing generally arcuate notched areas in the lateral edges at spaced intervals along the web of second absorbent material. The web of second absorbent material is severed transversely along a line intersecting the opposed generally arcuate notched areas at spaced intervals to form sections having opposed notched ends The sections are then positioned such that the notched ends are spaced apart and overlap the continuous rectilinear web of first absorbent material, forming layers of absorbent material. Then the layers of absorbent material are severed transversely at a point intermediate the notched ends.

Abstract: Described are absorbent members useful in the containment of body liquids such as urine. These absorbent members comprise at least one osmotic absorbent (preferably a hydrogel-forming absorbent polymer) and a high surface area material, and have a high capillary suction capacity. For purposes of the present disclosure, capillary suction capacity is measured in terms of the member's ability to uptake liquid at high capillary heights, which are generally encountered when the member is positioned in an absorbent article. In particular, capillary suction capacity is measured in terms of a member's capillary sorption absorbent capacity, which is measured in accordance with the Capillary Sorption method described in the Test Methods section.

Abstract: This application relates to the use of slitted regions in absorbent members formed of absorbent materials that remain relatively thin until wetted with such fluids. Suitable materials include presently preferred varieties of polymeric foam materials. Single and multi-layered absorbent members incorporating slitted regions are disclosed, as well as the use of pre-formed cup-shaped slits for enhanced initial fluid acquisition. Such slitted regions in combination with planar expansion properties enable the absorbent members to respond dynamically to various fluid loading conditions to create useful structural features. The slitted regions, in combination with absorbent materials having expansion potential in at least one direction within the plane of the absorbent member, cause the slitted regions to buckle and/or deform out of the plane of the absorbent member, thereby causing the slit surfaces to displace angularly and/or translationally with respect to one another. This more fully exposes the slit surfaces to the incoming fluid for improved acquisition capabilities. The use of pre-formed cup-shaped slits enables the absorbent member to more quickly capture and absorb aqueous body fluids, and is particularly useful for containment and dewatering of moist or runny fecal material and higher viscosity fluids and/or those having a higher concentration of particulate material therein such as blood, menses, or wound fluids.
