Abstract:
The disclosure relates to video rate adaptation techniques that may use information from a medium access control (MAC) layer and radio link protocol (RLP) layer. The techniques may greatly reduce video delay by adjusting video encoding rate. For real-time video telephony (VT) applications, these techniques may provide graceful quality degradation and improve user experience, especially when the channel conditions degrade.
Abstract:
A method of regulating data flow in a wireless communication network includes: collecting data regarding dynamic loading of sector-carrier pairs (pilots) in communication sectors of the wireless communication network; obtaining data rates for data flows of the pilots to access terminals within the wireless communication network; determining one or more pilots to use for conveying data in the wireless communication network based on the data rates and the dynamic loading; and altering data flow over the pilots by at least one of changing a data rate over at least one of the pilots or changing a combination of pilots used by the wireless communication network for conveying data to increase total data flow.
Abstract:
Upon successful decoding of a first set of slots of a first data packet, an Access Network (AN) can send an acknowledge message (ACK) to an Access Terminal (AT) to indicate that the AN has successfully decoded the data received in the first set of slots of the first data packet. Upon unsuccessful decoding of the first set of slots of the first data packet, the AN can send a negative acknowledge message (NAK) to the AT to indicate that the AN has not successfully decoded the data received in the first set of slots of a first data packet. Based upon receipt of the NAK, the AT can resend the data by sending a second set of slots of the first data packet containing redundant data. Based upon receipt of the ACK, the AT can send a first set of slots of another packet.
Abstract:
Techniques for improving the capacity of a wireless communications system using interference cancellation (IC). In an early decoding and IC aspect, a frame transmitted from a user to a base station may be decoded prior to the entire frame being received by the base station. The remaining portion of the frame may then be re-constructed at the base station prior to its reception, and cancelled from the receive signal to reduce the interference to frames received from other users. In a power control aspect for early decoding and IC, the power control target level at a local base station may be adjusted in response to successfully early decoding a frame, without affecting the overall outer loop power control operation. Further aspects include late decoding techniques for utilizing the IC of other users' signals to improve the probability of decoding a given user's frames, as well as techniques for traffic channel demodulation using channel re-estimation.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for determining the data rate of a reverse link communication of an access terminal includes receiving a reverse activity bit (RAB) from an access point in the communication system, and passing the RAB to a digital filter to produce a filtered RAB. The reverse link data rate is determined based on the filtered value of the RAB. Furthermore, a processor in the access terminal may determine whether the access terminal is in an idle mode, and passing a non-busy state value of the RAB to the digital filter when the access terminal is in the idle mode. The filtered RA may be compared to a threshold to determine a mode of reverse link data rate determination. The mode defines a set of criteria for an aggressiveness level of increasing or decreasing the reverse link communication data rate. The processor, therefore, determines the data rate based on the filtered reverse activity bit in accordance with the determined mode.
Abstract:
Some implementations of the present invention provide mechanisms for gating the transmission of FIN and other short overhead messages of the like in order to improve spectral efficiency. In some implementations spectral efficiency is improved by reducing the number of air-link connections established to merely transmit FIN and other short overhead messages of the like. In one implementation FIN messages are buffered in a queue and transmitted when an air-link connection is established to transmit higher value messages. In one implementation FIN messages are buffered and transmitted when the contents of the buffer breach a threshold that justifies the establishment of an air-link connection to transmit the contents of the buffer.
Abstract:
Allocating transmit power among two or more carriers assigned to a wireless communication device is disclosed. In one aspect, a method of allocating transmit power includes determining a total amount of data transmit power available at the wireless communication device for data transmission over the carriers. An efficiency metric is determined for each carrier based on the carrier's transmission characteristics and a portion of the total data transmit power is allocated to each carrier based on each carrier's efficiency metric.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for decreasing delays and thereby improving the performance of data transmissions in wireless communication systems by enabling increased data transmission rates to be selected for a reverse link between an access terminal and an access network. The new data rate is selected from several limiting rates, including a data-justified rate and a ramp-up-limited rate. In one embodiment, the data-justified rate is constrained to decrease in a controlled manner and cannot suddenly drop to 0. In another embodiment, the ramp-up-limited rate is allowed to return quickly to a sticky rate if the system is not busy rather than having to ramp up to the sticky rate according to the standard probabilities.
