Abstract: 21,246. Thomas, J., and Thomas, E. Sept. 25. Grabs for raising hay &c., of the type in which two forks are pivoted to shanks suspended from a bridge-piece or carriage and are also.adapted to be locked in the operative position by means of spring catches mounted on the shanks. According to the present invention, special suspending-means for the shanks and means for efficiently locking the forks in the operative position are provided. The Figure shows a pair of forks pivoted at 22 to shanks 21, which are pivoted at 4 to the carriage and connected by links 2 to a common hauling- ring. The spring latches 14, for maintaining the forks in operative position, slide in guides 19 and are connected to levers which are pivoted at 18, and are operated by cords 9 passing over pulleys on the depending plate 7 of the suspended carriage. Guides 12 are provided to protect the bolt-operating levers, and angle-plates 26 to strengthen the tines or the forks. Specifications No. 12,813, A.D. 1898, [Abridgment Class Lifting &c.], and No. 15,601, A.D. 1904, are referred to.

Fig. 2 shows a saddle plate a and an end piece b connected to it by its hooked end b , engaging with a T-shaped lateral extension a'. Figs. 7 and 8 show an end-plate b and saddle a, respectively ; the born b of the former is slipped into the slot a of the latter, and the gap b spans the neck a . Figs. 9 and 10 show another modification ; the saddle a is made with a plain lateral extension a', which is slipped into the slot b in the end plate b. In this modification, the plates a, b are partly built into the setting.

Abstract: 16,651. Thomas, J. July 28. Flexible metal pipes.-A flexible tube for the operating-wires of brake levers, valve levers, &c. is made by helically coiling a channel-shaped metal ribbon. Fig. 1 shows the shape of the ribbon as a double channel a , a , one channel being reversed. This ribbon is coiled as shown in Fig. 2, so that adjacent convolutions overlap and interlock. Yielding packing b may be placed between the interlocking rarts, thus producing an expansible and compressible tube impervious to dust and wet. Fig. 5 shows the wire in its tube or sheath.
